Trying to Get Pregnant

NGPR - Dog owners come in please

How do you give your dogs medicine?

With his heartworm medicine I can just give it to him and he'll eat the pill, but now he's on antibiotics and I guess they taste nasty so he won't eat them. I was squishing cheese around them and giving them to him, but he hasn't pooped since this morning so the cheese might have clogged him up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Pranut butter. Just for the record, I backspaced that damn word 3 times and I still typed 'pranut', so I'm leaving it :)

  • do you have any hamburger?  In a jam I would just grab hold, toss it down the throat and follow it with treats.  If you can crush it you could do that and mix it in PB.
  • one of my dogs will eat anything in peanutbutter..but another one requires you to push it down the side of her mouth and into her throat. I hate doing it, but its better than heart worms

  • We used to have to force feed our golden retriever.  Not fun, but he wasn't easily tricked.  GL.
  • My vet told me to put the pill, and a handful of cheerios in with his food, and he always just ate everything in the bowl!

We also used cheerios as training treats!

  • You can do the same thing with lunch meat. I know someone else who gets a spoon full of peanut butter and puts the pill in the peanut butter so he licks it up without knowing it.

  • I wrap mine in Ham sandwich meat!  My lab will eat anything so she is easy...but my Yorkie is no fool! I also give them an extra slice of ham for being a good dog and taking their meds! ;)

  • I ball it up in peanut butter, but then (and this is the trick) as soon as I stick it in her mouth, I stick a spoon full of pb in her face.  She's so excited about getting to the spoon that she gobbles down that first glob ob pb (with pill) without even noticing.

I do this for mine and it always works.

  • Peanut butter...she loves it.
  • I stick the pill into the back of his throat. He doesn't really have an option not to swallow that way.
  • Thanks so much! I never even thought of peanut butter so I'm off to try it now.

  • I recently went through this and the only thing that worked was crushing the pill up, mixing it with pb, and spreading the pb between two treats.  From the look on her face I think she could still taste it, but she had already swallowed.
  • PB works for my dogs too. They also eat raw beef patties (special for dogs) and I can squish pills in there too. Maybe also try canned dog food, you can give them spoonfuls of it and squish pills in there.

  • I cover it in melted cheese.  Maybe you can crush it and mix it in something yummy?

  • If you have trouble giving pills to your dog/cat, you need to get these:

    https://www.greenies.com/en_US/Products/DogPillPockets.aspx

They have different flavors, and different sizes for the different types of pills. My dog devours them when cheese, peanut butter, and all others wouldn't work.

  • Thanks again for suggesting the PB. He loved it and I don't even think he tasted the pill.

I'm glad the PB worked OP!  I do that or this, those pill pockets are so easy and have worked every single time!  Might be something to have for the future.

  • If peanut butter doesn't work, I'd try cheese.  I use the single slices of cheese that are individually wrapped.  I tear off a piece of cheese and squeeze it around the pill.  My dog eats the cheese covered pill without trying to chew it, but he finds pills in peanut butter.  GL!

  • I like to use the doggie cheese whiz...It's better than pb because they can swallow it a lot easier.  Esp. with little dogs that can have swallowing issues.

  • I put PB on a spoon, make her sit, give her a lick, open her mouth and drop the pill in the back of her throat, gently hold her muzzle mostly shut, tip her head back give her more PB that she has to lick and swallow.

  • I'm late and glad the pb worked, but I just wanted to add that we use cream cheese.

Our dog must be the only one that doesn't like pb, so I remembered my mom used to use cream cheese with our dogs. Now, our dog sniffs like crazy if I open cream cheese for myself -- he loves it!

  • Chunky peanut butter.  My dogs figured out pretty quickly with the creamy peanut butter where the pill was and ate around it.  If he doesn't like peanut butter, you can buy Pill Pockets at pretty much any pet store.  You just stick the pill in them and then squish the pocket closed and it's like a soft treat (I had these when I had to give my cat a pill and they worked really well for the cats.  I've also given them to the dogs just to see if they liked them and they did).
  • Ditto peanut butter... I open her mouth, pop the pills in the middle-back of her mouth and then smear a big dollop of peanut butter on her tongue.. she works on swallowing the peanut butter and down goes the pills too.
  • the green capsules?

our puppy was recently on them [right after we found him, just to be safe] and i just slipped it down the side of the throat with my finger and he swallowed it without knowing what happened. that was the only way it worked, he would eat whatever i gave him and drop out the pill.

oh yeah, then i gave him a treat so he wouldn't be traumatized. just kidding, it's really not a big deal, just put it down there and it's over in a second. it's uncomfortable at worst.

I give my furbabies the HW med that is liquid. Its called Advantage Multi. It's a flea med along with the hw med.

  • Whoops, maybe I should read the post completely before replying. I have to give my furbaby a pill twice per day for seizures. He knows when the time has come for the med's too. He will hover down and not look at me. Anyways, I put him in my lap, open his mouth and stick it as far back behind his tongue that I can and he swallows it. I give him a treat right after to wash it down.
  • We use the Greenies Pill Pockets.  Our dog loves them!  We takes two pills a day and would spit them out when we used anything else.  They are a bit pricey, and since we go through them quickly, we found them to be the cheapest on dog.com.  Good Luck!
