Working Moms

Do both of you work from home?

My husband and I both work at home.  I will be off work for 4 months for mat leave and then when I go back, I have the option to go into the office and will be gone for meetings sometimes but I'm mostly at home working.  We will be hiring a nanny for when I go back.  Any tips for those who have both parents at home most of the time?  I guess I'm just looking for any potential issues that could come up with the baby or with the nanny that I'm not thinking about. We both have our own work spaces and pretty much see each other at lunch time.  I'm sure I'll come out of my office more often than my husband will so I can nurse the baby, ect...

TIA...

Re: Do both of you work from home?

  • Yep DH and I both work from home. DH is in sales, so he will leave to go meet clients, etc, but for me, 99% of the time I work from home. We too have a nanny.

What's hard is hearing everything in the background - particular if baby is crying.  You'll need to learn to step back and let your nanny build a relationship with your LO.  It's hard.

Overall I love it.  I'm glad the kids are sleeping in their own bed, eating food that I choose, getting to see me more - I generally nurse DS at lunch, so I'll also sit with DD then too.  On the downside - the previously mentioned comment, but otherwise 2 things: sometimes the kids seem to have a hard time letting mommy get back to work (for example, if I come out of my office to refill my coffee) and second I miss being able to get some household stuff done during my lunch hour (before #2, DD went to a licensed DC center; as such during lunch I could fold laundry, dust, empty the dishwasher, etc.  Now it's impossible to do that).

We have considered getting locks on our office doors b/c sometimes DD will run into our office when we are on calls, but she's getting better about knocking and waiting to be invited in.

  • We did for the last ~3 months of my pregnancy. My job was always WAH. DH left his company when I was 6 months pregnant to start a new business, and they had no office space at first, so he WAH too.

We ended up never having both of us WAH with a baby. By the time I came off maternity leave, DH's company had office space, so he usually went in there.

That said, having had the experience of both of us WAH, and then me WAH with a baby... I don't think it would've been any different if both of us had WAH with a baby (compared to just me doing it). There's a post a few posts down on this board where someone is asking about WAH with a baby, and I responded in there -- pretty much applies to your scenario as well.

One thing that I didn't put in the previous post, but since you specifically mentioned nursing... I actually did not nurse while WAH. I pumped, just like if I were in the office. There were a couple of reasons for this. 1) Being tied to my boobs limited my nanny's flexibility -- I realized this when she had to cut a trip to the park short to bring a shrieking DD home to nurse. 2) My nanny just wasn't prepared to deal with me nursing. She would think that I was busy and give DD a bottle (without telling me) rather than "disturbing" me, but then that messed up my whole nursing/pumping schedule. Point being, if you're expecting to mostly nurse during the day, be sure to discuss that with prospective nannies during the interview. (I didn't. I just kinda sprung it on the nanny on her first day. Not a good idea!) And be flexible on occasions where it just works out better for DC to get a bottle.

  • Thanks Ladies....I appreciate your insights.  We'll see how it goes!
