Curious--Teachers and Maternity Leave

In my district, we have to use our sick days for maternity leave and even then, it's only for six weeks.  I have well over one hundred sick days and would love to stay home for another six weeks, but I will have to make up some illness and have my doctor agree with me, so that I can stay home longer. 

Is anyone elses maternity leave like this?

    Shouldn't your district be under FMLA? We are, so I can have up to 12 weeks in a year of leave. I do have to use all of my sick days, and then anything after that is unpaid, but my job will be held for up to 12 weeks.

    I just can't see a school district being under the size limit required for FMLA.

    I'm not working this year, so it's not an issue, but it was the same in my district.  6 weeks for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for c/s.  However, it seems that it was pretty easy for folks to find reasons that they needed longer and a doctor that agreed with them enough to fill out the paperwork.

    ***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.

    Your district should be covered under FMLA where you can use additional sick leave for up to 12 weeks off.  I would ask your union rep or your HR department...

    I've been paying in every check for short term disability. We can go on maternity leave but we don't get paid or benefits. The short term pays a certain % of the pay check which in actuality pays for the benefits I'll now have to pay out of pocket. IT SUCKS plain and simple! I have sick days but I plan on using those once the STD stops paying me. Its really confusing!

    I'm taking this year off as well but we were given the same as a PP.  6 weeks for vaginal and 8 for c/s.  We could also use sick days after our time was up.  Most teachers ended up taking 12 weeks.

    As of June, we have FMLA, but it definitely doesn't pay like my regular salary and we need that money.  We just bought a house and we are still trying to get adjusted to the new cost of living.  I also have disablity and that also matches my salary.  I'm thinking of using my sick days for the first six weeks and then using my disability for the second six weeks.  I just hate that I have to lie about my condition to stay home for a while longer.

     Same here.  I wish I could use more of my sick days for the remainder of my FMLA leave, but they don't allow it.

    In my district we get to take the 6 or 8 weeks depending on c-section or not as a temporary disability and then take 12 weeks for FMLA. I am taking off the first semester of the school year, but I am only getting paid for the time I have accumulated for sick days. My district says it is an easier transition for students if you take either the quarter or semester off. I just wish I had more sick time available to get paid for. I am just luck that I do not have to pick up the cost of insurance.

    My district is the same--6 weeks vaginal & 8 weeks c-section.  After those weeks you can take off more (up to 12 total under FMLA) but then it is all unpaid.  I agree though--I was wanting to use a lot of my sick days and stay home way longer than 6 weeks.
