Preemies

When is he going to talk?

*stomps feet*

I'm so anxious for speech and he just has no interest. He doesn't mimic at all. He'll babble (mostly "dadadada" all freaking day. Little traitor) but when you try to get him to mimic you, he just stares like "HUH?"

The gross motor delays don't really bother me that much. I mean, sure, I'd like him to be able to sit himself up, and crawl and such, but I know he'll get there. But the lack of words things makes me worry and frustrates me.

I swear, the NICU did help me be more patient, but I WANT WORDS.

Re: When is he going to talk?

  • My DD didn't really start talking until 18 months and even then it was just a few words.  Now she's 3 and is forming full sentences.  She was a 26 weeker.  All I can say is be patient....all of a sudden you won't be able to shut him up.

  • Yeah, Ce has no words either and Mars barely has any too. I'm trying to not let it bother me so much because I think this is definitely one area of development where every kid can be vastly different - even full term babies.

I just keep talking to them and repeating myself over and over.

  • I hear ya.  We have babbles but no words.  We sign to him as well and he just smiles like we are really funny clowns.  After several months, I still don't think he gets any of our signs (not that we use all that many).  He also doesn't get shaking yes/no either. So frustrating!!!
  • E didn't start wanting to talk until about 15 months... before then she had NO interest in babbling or pretending to hold a conversation. She was way more interested in the gross motor and then when she figured that out she decided that maybe talking wasn't so bad. She's still not very talkative though.

  • Keira has only just started mimicking us regularly. ?My husband is a musician and there is always music playing in our house and I find that she is more interested when speech is musical. ?If I sing to her and stop right in the middle of a very familiar song (Itsy Bitsy Spider for instance) she will babble to fill in the blanks. ?If I say common phrases in a sing-songy way (Things like "All Done", "Night Night", "Good Morning", etc.) ?she is more likely to try to imitate me.

I guess what I'm trying to say is If you don't play a lot of music for him...try it. ?It can't hurt. ?It is working for us! ?Laurie Berkner has the best kids cd's (and they aren't annoying...you just may like them too!) if you need any music suggestions.

  • Oh, and I have a video clip on my blog of Keira imitating me "sing" the phrase "All Done" during breakfast. ?It is the second post (August 23, I think?) ?You can see how she isn't really saying anything, but is kind of trying to imitate the melody and then accidently says "All Done!". ?If you do go to my blog to watch it, you have to first promise me two things.....

    1. ?Ignore my voice. ?It is super irritating on tape.

    2. ?Don't get fooled by the amount of food K has on her tray. She didn't eat one bite of it and I figured, hell, if she isn't going to eat, I may as well work on speech.

  • mcdev, i"ll watch tonight (I'm at work w/o headphones)

We do sing *ALL THE TIME* and I've tried the stopping in the middle of the song thing. He just looks at me expectently. He'll wait.. wait..wait.. then give up on me and play with someone else. No filling in the blanks. He does occasionally get excited when I sign (flaps his arms. He doesn't clap yet, either) and if I sing "head shoulders knees and toes" he'll lean over and hit the button on the sing along stage that plays that song. So he gets SOMETHING, but no trying on his own.

he'll blow raspberries all day long until I try to get him to do it back to me.. he'll say dada until I say it..

I've tried the "where's daddy?" thing.. thinking maybe he'd look for him (or the dog, or the cat or whatever) but he just stares at me like "you're cute when you make those funny noises."

I'm 99% sure he doesn't even know his name. I swear, all I do the entire time we're together is say "Robbie! Hey Robbie! Robbie look over here. ROBBIE! Ohhhhhh Robbie. PEEKABOO ROBBIE" Hell, he's probably sick of hearing his name.

  • Brendan is the same way...when we try to get him to mimic us he laughs at us, nice huh? lol   These boys may be the death of us lol
  • We didn't get first words until 14 months actual and by 2yrs actual he only had about 30 words most of which were animal noises.  Then suddenly at 2yrs, 4mos he had an explosion (seems to be a common exploding age for boys) and he completely skipped putting 2 words together and just came out with a 6 word sentence...and hasn't shut up since - lol.

We never did speech therapy because he was always within range (BARELY) for adjusted age and we weren't concerned about him - glad I followed my mama gut, he's 3.5 now and has a vocabulary that would give many adults a run for their money :-P

  • Tricia- You know we're working hard on speech and just recently have seen progress.  Does Robbie get ST (for speech not feeding)?  Our ST is awesome and I've seen such progress since C started.
  • aw I'm sorry ((hugs))
  • Martha- no. They keep saying he's on track for her adj. age because he babbles so much. Maybe I should ask for another evaluation. It's been a few months. He's due for his yearly IFSP meeting with EI in the next 5 weeks.
I think I'll call our coordinator tomorrow and see if she can have another eval done so if we qualifiy, they can start then.
  • The boys didn't start babbling any sounds until they were about 10mos old actual, then they started babbling sounds like crazy at about 13mos, and only these last three weeks have they started imitating simple sounds I make.  My first break through was teaching them to hold the back of their hand up and pat their mouth while making the "aaahhhh" sound.  Now that's all the do lately.  But yesterday I made the "oooooh" sound to Evan while staring at him in the mirror and he started copying me.  He also started copying my clucking of the tongue the other day too.  Cameron usually follows with the sound in a few days.
  • im having the same problem with my son. he just turned a year this past friday. he was born at about 30 weeks but the doctor said that its normal. and that he will get there eventually
