3rd Trimester

If you're planning on FFing...

Have you considered store-brand formula?

DD was EBF for the first 6 months and change.  My supply completely crapped out around that point and all attempts to revive it failed.  We started switching to formula.  At first, we were using up sample cans of Enfamil and Similac we had since DD was born, but when it came to start buying it ourselves, we started getting Up & Up, Target's brand.  Formula is one of, if not THE most regulated substance by the FDA, and all formula must meet their minimum requirements.  Up and Up is nutritionally the same as Enfamil, in fact, the only differences I have noticed it doesn't smell as foul as Enfamil does and the formula seems a little coarser but dissolves just as well.  There are comparisons of the nutrients on the label and I believe every number is the same.  Walmart, BRU and I believe Costco also have their own brands.

The best part is that the store brands about half the price of Enfamil, Similac and Good Start.  They also have varieties like gentle/sensitive, soy, etc.  Unless your LO winds up requiring a certain kind of formula, you can save yourself a LOT of money with a store brand.  HTH, ladies, and have a great rest of your pregnancies.

P.S.  For those due next month, the 21st is an excellent birthday. Smile

  • A friend of mine has 10 month old twins and recommended Target brand formula to me.  She said it is just as good as the name brand stuff and is way cheaper.

  • I've heard this from multiple people. I definitely have been looking into store brand formulas in case BF doesn't work out for us. Thank you!

  • I completely agree. DD eventually (took a while to find a formula that worked for her) ended up on Walmart's Parent's Choice Sensitive. Saved us a TON of money. We hope to use generic formula for this next baby, too.

  • I have heard this from a lot of moms. However, when my daughter was born her pediatrician said "I don't care which formula you give her as long as it is one of the three name brands".  I guess different doctors have their preferences.  Rylie ended up on Nutramigen, so it didn't really matter for us.  I'll consider the name brands as money saved for us if we don't have to end up on that stuff again!  Big Smile
