We got "captain's" style beds for both my kids at Wal-mart. This style bed has a bookcase at the head and drawers under the bed. The mattress sits right on the bedframe with no box springs. They are not the best quality furniture, but fine for kids, and lots of storage! The bedframe was about $130, and we bought mattresses at Big Lots -- not sure if you have this in Maine, it's an overstock discount store that carries everything from cheerios and cokes to furniture and tools.
Still, the mattresses were expensive -- about $200 each. Sometimes mattress stores will give you a deal if you buy more than one mattress at a time, so if you think you're going to replace your own mattress, or another one in the house, consider trying to get your child's twin mattress at a discount when you buy another mattress.

Ikea?
Ikea. Best place ever.
We got our bed there too. It was their top-of-the-line mattress and we love it.
