here's the thing about kids and sleeping...

I kind of get it. I mean, Mommy sleeps with Daddy. Daddy sleeps with Mommy. Why does the kid have to sleep alone? He's just a kid.

At least, that's what I imagine the internal monologue would be in PAC's head every time we try to get him to sleep in his room.

  • I never thought about that before, but it's probably true with DD too.

  • DD says that's why she sleeps with her puppies (stuffed animals) and DD#2 sleeps with her lovey.
  • Honestly, I think you're right.  I let Maddie sleep with me while dh was away last week.  I explained that she could stay with me while daddy was gone, but when he got back on Sunday she needed to go back in her own bed.  nd my not yet 4 year old very reasonably stated "Why?  I can just sleep right here in the middle of you like I do when I sleep over Nonni and Bum's house."
  • Makes sense to me :)
  • I agree.  To me it does seem more natural for a baby to sleep with its mom.

That said, I never slept well during the year that DD spent in our bed and I'd be thrilled if our next one was happy in its crib from day 1!

  • Absolutely and if you ever start the habit of sleeping in their bed or vice versa ... I would miss the security and cuddles too.  It's just one of those things that they don't know how good they have it until they CAN'T take naps and HAVE to share a bed. :)

  • Makes perfect sense to me!
  • That's what I've been thinking for months!  DD has been in our room every night for 2 months.  She's 3 and never had a problem staying in her own bed.  Then she had a fever of 104 a couple of months ago and I let her sleep in our bed with me while DH took the guest room.  Ever since then, she's been in our bed.  The bigger picture is that our 5 month old was in our room, at the time, as well as our two dogs who sleep on the floor.  There was no way I could tell DD that the 5 of us of going to sleep down here together and you have to be alone upstairs.

We had been holding off moving the baby up to his crib because we did not trust DD up there alone with him at night.  (She tries to climb in his crib when he naps during the day so he won't be lonely).  So last week it occurred to me that if DD was downstairs with us, I was going to get DS to sleep upstairs.  And wouldn't you know, the second night in his crib, he STTN for the first time ever and has been sleeping great ever since.  So it kind of sort of worked out for the best.  I just have to figure out when it will be safe to try getting DD back upstairs in her own room.

  • Yeah I agree. It's like they are being left out of the slumber party- lol.

  • Yep.  DD is much happier sharing a room with DS.  His room is connected to ours, hers isn't so she feels isolated.

She also wakes up & wanders into our room about twice a week no matter where she is, but it's usually not a big deal.
