I want to start off by saying I feed DS between 3 and 6 oz a feeding depending on how long it has been since he ate last. He usually only eats about 4.5oz.
Well yesterday I posted about ds spitting up foul smelling clear liquid- https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/21367586.aspx
I got him in to see someone right away. The office I go to consists of about 15 pedi and there is only one who I absolutely hate and actually requested to see ANYONE but her. Well, she was the only one who had an opening so I agreed to see her just because if something happened to ds overnight I would never forgive myself.
First the nurse checked him and she said that it sounds like reflux (which I already knew he had) and she checked his stats which he was perfect, in the 50 percentile for height, weight, and head circumference.
Then the doctor came in. I told her what was going on and I told her how much I was feeding him. She completely ignored the clear spit up, the arching back, how he hates laying on his back and ignored what I said about what my previous doctor was doing to work with this.
Instead, she told me I am feeding him too much! He is 2.5 mos old and she said I shouldn't feed him more than 3 oz! Tell me how I am feeding him too much if he spits up even after 1 oz? And why is he spitting up clear liquid instead of formula? Also, how can I be feeding him too much if he is growing perfectly?!
The best part about it is, she told me that if he is still acting hungry after 3 oz, put chocolate syrup on his paci and let him suck on that!
Please tell me if I am wrong for thinking this lady is a quack
Re: I feed my kid too much?! Pedi vent! (kinda long)
Chocolate syrup???? I think I would be demanding to see one of the other pedi in the group or switching groups - that is crazy!
I can't really comment on the bottle size issue - DS still just takes 3 oz bottles, but all babies are different - that doesn't mean that your LO doesn't need bigger bottles.

She told me to make an follow up appt on Fri to see how that works. Instead I made the appointment with my regular pedi.
Believe me, I'm telling my regular pedi all about her on Fri. This isn't the first time this woman went against what my normal pedi said.
And I am not the only one in my area who had a problem with this woman.
If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck...
You should definitely get a second opinion.
First of all - are all the pedis joint owners or is there a board or a specific doctor that is 'head'. I would let them know exactly what she did and said.
CHOCOLATE SAUCE FOR A BABY. Yeah. Okay. Let's give them a dose of sugar. That'll solve it. QUUUUUUAAAACCCKKKK.
Our pedi actually tried to go down the route of telling me I was feeding DS too much at our 1 month visit. I knew I wasn't. I continued to feed him. He is a big boy - I think it is just in his genetic make-up. At his 3 month visit I told her how much I was feeding him and she said 'oh he's a big boy - he needs every drop'. So lol sometimes I think it just depends what their mood is.
Reflux and dairy/milk/lactose allergies are all becoming over-diagnosed and every parent brings them up - I think - at one point or another (so another pedi told me) and so sometimes when a new parent brings up these issues - the pedi does ignore it because every baby has reflux at some point and every baby has an intolerance at some point to the milk/lactose.
Anyway ... DS was eating between 25-30 oz per day at 2 mo. By 3 months he was eating 30-35 and now at 4 months he is eating 35-45 oz. He comes from big/tall biological parents and even though he was born at 5lbs he has now almost quadrupled that weight and is 18lbs.
When he over-eats it comes back up as formula, not clear reflux liquid - though I know that over eating can make the symptoms of reflux worse.
Good luck and I would talk to another pedi.
Oh. My. God.
I am just happy that you are intelligent and informed enough to recognize a cah-razy when you see one. The sad thing is, there are probably mom's out there putting chococalte syrup on their still-hungry LO's pacis as we speak.
I am scared.
