Newbie: PCOS and pre-TTC

I wasn't sure if I should post here or not, but someone on GP suggested I do, so here goes!

I was diagnosed with PCOS in June 2009 and was put on BCP b/c DH was laid off around the same time and that put our TTC plans on old. I am hopeful that we will be TTC before the holidays.

My question is, how soon would you go off BCP and start to chart (we will probably use condoms as a back-up until we are ready to TTC)? I don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but at the same time, I would like to be ready for when we TTC (feel comfortable charting, know if I ovulate, regulate after the BCP, etc.). I have my yearly PAP scheduled for next week and i'm not sure if that is too soon?

TIA!

  • I'm a newbie, too and I was in your situation last month. I feel it's never too early to start charting. My doctor told me to come off BCP 2 months before we started TTC. We jumped the gun and made it 1 month, though. I figured since I didn't ovulate on my own that we wouldn't be successful before 2 months, anyway. I would definitely keep the PAP appointment and talk to your doctor, though. And ask for a recommendation to an RE. I did learn that much off this board Big Smile

  • Welcome! I am glad you decided to come over to check out this board. I am a newbie too and I was dx in August.

You asked about BCP and charting, I can tell you what my experience has been. I was on BCP for 13 years and decided to stop taking it in Feb so my periods would regulate on their own by the time we were ready to TTC (Dec 09). However my periods never came back, which has been attributed to the PCOS. If if were me, I would go off BPC immediately and see if your periods are regular. In the mean time, I would use condoms to prevent pregnancy. If you wait to go off BCP you could be unaware of the symptoms of anovulation and no treating them. Definitely go to your PAP appointment and bring up these concerns with your OBGYN and ask for a referal to a RE.

Since being diagnosed with PCOS via ultrasound on August 5 (blood work confirmation on August 10), I have been slowly coming to terms with this issue. The blood work also showed insulin resistance and my vit D was very low. I have lost 10 pounds in a bit over a month (I have another 40 to lose) and take prenatal vit and 2000 mg vit D supplement. I also take Met 2/day and I am my first cycle of provera (14 day cycle).

I am sorry this is a really long post!! Good luck!

  • I would go off of the bcp as well. bcp only masks pcos and doesn't help it at all. You can still chart and use condoms while TTA with pcos. One of the big factors with pcos is annovulatory cycles, and charting will help you determine if that is the case for you. You can start on Metformin now as well.

Keep the annual appointment, but make another one to get the metformin script.
