3rd Trimester

Does your Dr. schedule a C/S if you're breech?

She was head down weeks ago but yesterday I could have sworn I felt hiccups high in my stomach. I mentioned it at my 34 week appt today and Dr. said she'd do an u/s at 36 weeks if she couldn't definintely tell. She said if she was breech then that we would start talking about scheduling a c-section and other options etc. Woa, woa, woa....I know breech is not ideal and is higher risk etc but babies can be born vaginally breech right? Or is that just accidental when it happens and they try to avoid it at all times?

Re: Does your Dr. schedule a C/S if you're breech?

  • There are, unfortunately, very few OBs who will deliver breech babies anymore (and they are not trained to do so), but it is possible if the baby is frank breech (not footling, etc).  Sounds as if your doctor is not one of the few, though.

  • In my prepared childbirth class they said that all but one of the docs who deliver there will do a c-section for a breach baby.

  • I think malpractice insurance and hospital policies keep Drs from vaginally delivering breech babies these days.  I am sure your Dr will talk to you about a version (which I hear hurts like hell) or having a C-section.

Henry has been head down since 29 weeks and I sometimes feel his hiccups up high.  I am guessing I am feeling his chest/back moving because of them.

  • With Julia we confirmed she was breech at 34 weeks and scheduled a c/s mainly to get on the schedule because it was a busy hospital.  The dr made it very plain that we could cancel if she turned or chose to do an external version.  At that particular hospital, it was against policy to deliver breech babies vaginally.

I don't know, but I am constantly trying to figure out how babe is positioned.  Maybe it is too early?  Still...I would be willing to try my hardest to have my baby vaginally...even if he was breech.  I was under the impression that you can have the baby vaginally.

Ask your Dr to feel at your next appt.  He should be able to tell.

  • There are a lot of risks associated with a vaginal breech birth.  My ex husband was born frank breech and did not breathe for 2 minutes and still has hip problems to this day.  Not to say that it can't be done, but it is not without risk to mother and baby.

  • I believe that my doctor told me that the AMA is absolutely against delivering breech babies vaginally and that I should be concerned if I hear a doctor say that they are willing to do so.

(((must remember to do the spinningbabies exercises....)))

  • Some midwives will deliver breech but most will not. Usually it is accidental if it happens

    You still have time though.

  • Ditto to the PPs who said it is unfortunately very rare to find a doc who will deliver a breech babe vaginally. There are MANY things you can do to try to turn baby though, spinningbabies.com, and external version from the doc, & the Webster method (done by a chiropractor) are a few choices.

You can also try to find an OB in your area to transfer to who will deliver (or at least let you have a try) a breech babe vaginally. I met with (I think) the only OB in my state who does vaginal breech births early in my pregnancy just in case, but our LO is firmly head down now.

  • I have been wondering this too - If they could deliver my sister breech in 1982, with all the medical advances you'd think they can do it now too. My baby has been breech all along (with a couple weeks of head down here and there) and while I hope she turns, I don't want it to automatically be a c/s if she doesn't.
  • The hospital where I deliver does not allow breech deliveries, even if my doctor wanted to try.  My baby was breech at the last u/s, but my OB said that he wasn't concerned at all and there was still plenty of time.  They'd start talking about version/c-section at 36 weeks.

I was trying to do some of the excercises to get her to turn until I started having crazy pubic bone pain.  Hopefully, that will stop soon!

***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • My doctor has but almost none will do it. ?There are many risks. ?Start doing the midwife exercises now or the webster technique?chiropractor?or acupuncture for turning a baby. ?if your doctor says they don't work, do them anyways. ?And good luck. ?Once you get to 36 its almost too late they can try an external version but if its your first you have a less than 50 percent chance it will work.

  • Huh, I had no idea! Thanks for the info. Hopefully she's still head down and as a pp'er suggested maybe it was her back where I felt her hiccups. But so as not to take any chances spinningbabies and polar bear yoga pose here I come!
