Our NICU scheduled a developmental clinic appointment for DD before she was discharged. We go in 2 weeks and she will be about 3 1/2 months. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Thanks!
We had our follow-up with Dr. Escobar. I'm not sure if you're seeing him but he's awesome. Very knowledgable.
They did several tests (be sure to bring food for LO!) to test congitive, gross motor, and fine motor skills.
They will tell you where your LO "measures". For example, at 3 months adjusted, our DS measured at 3 months + 10 days in all areas.
They also showed us and explained the preemie growth curve, and told us how they thought he was doing.
They also answered any other questions we had. For example, we'd still be fortifying DS's milk to 24-cal with Nutramigen, and he said at 3 months, there wasn't any reason to do that, and that we stop fortifying and that I just needed to make sure to take a DHA supplement. This was a surprise to us since his weight gain had been marginal!
I think the point is to help YOU and to help the Neos to learn what impact various things in the NICU had on their kiddos, and to see how they are doing. It's especially helpful since some of the pedis aren't used to seeing little preemies and some of the rules are different.
GL! I hope you have a great appt. We learned a lot and I can't wait to go back!
I was hoping you and DS saw the same Doc!! Thank you so much for all the info, the NICU didnt tell us much when we left -- but then again maybe they did and I was too distracted!
How long did your appt take? Our appt is at 2:30. DH will be meeting me there from work. What happens if DD is super sleepy?
I was dreading this but now I am looking forward to it.

I also had NO clue what the appointment was about when we went. lol. They didn't tell us a thing either! (Weird.) Maybe they intentionally don't make a big deal out of it b/c they don't want us moms to worry. (You know, we do that!)
I was nervous going into it, but, I felt SO SO SO much better about DS when we left. I really hope you feel that way. So many things we thought he was struggling with, and when we left, we went home feeling like everything he's going through (eating issues, rate of weight gain, etc. etc,) is totally normal. I felt like we'd been doing something right, instead of feeling like we were just "getting by".
The appt took a while. I think we were there for 2 hours! The PT will do a lot of diff tests and they take a while, and then you have to talk to the dr.
We got lucky and DS napped before we left. We had to feed him in the middle of the appt. He was definitely tired by the end of all of the tests they did....but I think they expect that and account for that. I guess there isn't much you can do.
GL! Let me know how it goes. I hope your LO does well !
Oh, and if you have ANY questions about anything, ask. Also, ask about solids. That was a big point of discussion for us and after the appt, he called our pedi and talked to him and changed the pedi's previous instructions about when to start, etc.
Dr. E will also give you his email and if you ever have questions, you can email him, and he's quick to respond! (I did email him once and I heard back after not too long. Super convenient and a nice way to verify info from the pedi if you aren't sure.)
Re: Developmental Clinic Appt Soon
Did you go to St. V Wom? (I'm in Indy, too)
