Backordered: Order elsewhere?

I just found out that the mattress we ordered from Great Beginnings (online) is now backordered 4-6 weeks. If all goes well and the little one stays in there (like she should!) we only have 15 weeks left max.

I know that you're supposed to air out the mattress for quite some time, and after hearing from others, even then it doesn't seem to make a difference with the smell. Would you reorder elsewhere to get it sooner, or wait? Any tips on airing it out to get the smell out? We thought about organic, but then decided not to... :(

We actually bought all of our furniture from Great Beginnings because their store is down here in MD, but they didn't seem to have the mattresses in store. I'll have to call and double check.

  • Do you plan to put your baby to sleep in the crib right away?  If not, even if it does show up a little later than you expected, you can still air it out.

DD spent her first month in the basinette and the PNP, never in the crib.  It probably would have been longer in the basinette if BF'ing had worked out.

This exactly.  J was in his bassinet for 2 months and would have been in longer if he wouldn't have outgrown it.

  • You know our story - we aired ours out for 4 months before having him sleep on it.  So, we've had it for 8 months and some days his head still smells like vinyl :(  IMO, I'd just keep your order.  I'm not sure the extra 4-6 wks will make that much of a difference.

  • We used a PNP for my son for almost 10 months.  I never noticed a smell with our mattress.  If you plan to use the mattress right away, you might want to have a back-up plan.

  • I didn't know you had to air the mattress out.  Ooops.  Sophia slept in the bassinet for her first 4 months anyway.  I'd keep the order.
