Have you traveled with BM or shipped it?

My mom is very sick, and I am going to travel to see her and say good bye.  I am thinking about going without my twins, but I am still BFing.  Has anyone shipped BM with dry ice or traveled with it on a plane (I'm guessing I'll have about 150 oz)  Any suggestions are very welcomed.

  • First, I'm sorry to hear about your mom.  I would suggest shipping your BM in a cooler with dry ice.  That is what I did with the BM I just donated.  You can get dry ice at pretty much any grocery store.  Good luck!

  • I'm sorry about your mom.  I traveled with DS in June and brought about 100 oz. of pumped milk home with me.  I just brought it frozen in an insulated cooler with an ice pack.  All they did was peek in it and make sure it was BM.  According to the TSA website, they have to allow you to carry BM with you.

There's a lot more guidelines about dry ice (I know the airline we flew with would have charged us $25 even to carry it on) and we would have had to mark the cooler.  I took a chance with the insulated cooler, but I had no problem and I have read about other girls here doing the same.  Good luck!

  • I put took frozen milk with me in an insulated container with frozen ice packs packed in my checked bag.  It didn't even come close to thawing out and I didn't have to worry about security.
  • Yep - 3 times, one of which was from Mexico.  Look for my posts I have lots of details.
