anyone have experience with hypersensitivity to bug bites?

DS woke up this morning with red spots all over his body (arms, legs, trunk, neck, forehead, etc).  Sort of mosquito bite like, but smaller.  This is the second time this has happened.  This time more severe than the first time.  Pedi says it's most likely a hypersensitivity reaction to one bug bite.  Not a rash.  DS does not seem bothered by the spots but it looks terrible.

She suggested giving him some benedryl tonight to see if that helped get rid of the spots.  Other than that, no real suggestions (DH took him to the pedi today, I probably would have asked more questions!)  Does this warrant a trip to a dermatologist?  an allergist?

I'm worried that it's going to get worse each time since it is so much worse this time than the first time it happened.  Anyone have any experience with this.

  • 2 of my girls have that problem.  Its like they are allergic to mosquito bites.  It looks a lot worst than it really is.  I use hydrocortisone cream on them and a dose of benadryl at night.

Personally I dont think it warrants a trip to the derm. or an allergist.  Just make sure you put bug repellant on them (kid friendly kind) and try to avoid going outside during the worst of it.

  • I have it.  I get giant welts that bleed when I get a mosquito bite.  I don't walk out of the house to even get the mail without deet based bug spray on.  My DS is the same way (5 mo) and my DD isn't.  It is annoying and can be painful, but you get used to it.  I never wear perfume or use fabric softner because it makes it worse.  I don't do yard work because of it either.
  • My DD2 is this way.  It's awful.  Last week she got a bite near her eye and it swelled shut.  We carry benadryl with us wherever we go.  A couple times it's been so bad that the dr rx'd a steroid.
  • Both my kids do.  Last week DS2 got a bit on his forehead - it was slightly raised/red (as usual) when he went to bed, and when he got dropped off at daycare.  The next day at daycare, within a few hours is swelled so big it was the size of a golf ball.  I took him in to the dr and found out that there isn't really much tehy can do, and it will likely happen for a long time (though he may grow out of it).
