Right now our biggest problem is ds scratching at his arms and legs. Even when the rash doesn't look bad he'll scratch till he bleeds sometimes. It seems worse at night. (We're using Aquaphor right now and bathing him about 1 time a week. We've talked to our pedi, but not seen a dermatologist, but that may happen soon).
Right now we've cranked the a/c up and we dress him in pants and long sleeves so he can't scratch as easily. I keep his nails short. At night I've tried putting socks on his hands so he can't scratch, but he usually gets these off if he tries.
Any suggestions for stopping the scratching, especially at night?
Re: s /o Eczema moms - how to stop scratching?
I mentioned this below, but this is an ongoing issue for us, since DS keeps getting skin infections from scratching his eczema. We do zip up footie pajamas so he can't get directly to the rash overnight (arms and legs are his issue as well). If he has a bad flare up, we've been doing a wet wrap at night...Wet wrap = layer of hydrocortisone, layer of aquaphor, wet bandage, dry bandage, tight pj pants, footie pjs (2 pajama bottoms to keep him warm with the wetness overnight). That seems to help the itch some overnight.
We have been battling Eczema since Eian was a few months old. It has gotten better as he gets older but we still have flare ups. We too took him to a dermo but I don't think he was much help. Here is what we did:
1) Our pedi wrote a RX for antibotics. I didn't want to go the meds route but he was miserable. Literally, a few days later his skin start to look like a baby! Soft to the touch, etc. etc. Our flam up's since then have been few and far between.
2) In doing some of my own research I read that bathes more often actually help add moisture to the skin is luke warm and for short periods. I went againist th peds advice and tried this. For us, it works! Every night in Aveen Oatmeal bath. If he is having a bad night, we also make a paste of Aveeno and lather him up while he soaks. This also cleanses the skin so we don't use any soap. If I don't bathe him for a night or two, we see the difference.
3) After trying all the products, Baby Eczema Cream works the best for us. Seems like each person says something different so find what works for you by trying it all.
4) As far is itching, some times I add it to my "cocktail" of creams at night. Aveeno Anti Itch cream seems to help.
Hope this helps, hang in there kiddo, it sucks I know!
