Last year our RE told us we didn't need IUI because DH's SA was so good - she said it really wouldn't help us - and we got pg with twins on our first clomid/ovidrel/TI try. We lost them in Jan.
Now that we are trying again, we have gone through several cycles....still within the range of "normal" - I'm now on my 5th cycle and seeing if I will ovulate on my own - I've ovulated 5 eggs in the past 4 months with good timing and a better lining than the BFP cycle and not gotten pg.....
We consulted with her and this time she backpedaled and said maybe try IUI (even though DH's repeat SA was even better than last time)....I am hesistant because we have no IUI coverage and we did get pg with TI once - I worry that there is some issue that IUI won't compensate for and we will just waste the money....
What has your RE told you about IUI with a normal or good SA? And how many more ovulatory cycles would you go before trying IUI or moving to IVF?
thanks....
Re: TI vs IUI - opinions please....
He does have super-sperm but an IUI even with femara would cost us about $800-1000 so trying 3 IUIs if they only increase our chance from 20% to 25% seems like a lot of money....(that could pay for almost 1/2 the cost of IVF with a better chance and a shot at frozen embies)....
5 mg femara gives me either 1 or 2 follies - we definitely don't want higher order multiples so I don't want to increase the dose - plus even though it isn't supposed to thin your lining, I think it does thin mine (it was only about 6.5 mm with a mature follie and my period seems light)
My RE said that with a normal SA, doing IUI does not increase chances all that much, if at all.
However, we have done four TI cycles with Clomid and nothing yet; I have an appointment with him for next week and while I know we will be changing my meds, I strongly suspect that he is also going to recommend IUI soon(which does cause me some hesitation at this point, only because I think I am still in some denial that it won't happen on its own). However, I'm already thinking of setting my limit to 1-2 more cycles naturally with the new medication before moving to IUI at least.
i just don't get how they can backtrack - first they tell you - "well IUI isn't really going to up your chances" - then if TI doesn't work they say "well, how about an IUI..."....
If the problem for me is a uterine factor or paratubal cysts getting in the way, an IUI is a total waste....I don't get why an IUI would work now when TI did before if DH's number's haven't changed....i guess it could be the meds, but if injectibles + TI don't work I'm torn....if we do an IUI and spend $1000 and it's a BFN, I think I am going to just kick myself for not going straight into IVF....
We were in this same situation. DH had no sperm issues whatsoever. We got pregnant our second month trying on our own, so I really didn't think we needed it. But, once we got to our 4th Clomid cycle, we added it. Just for "extra insurance". We have done 6 IUI's now, and got pregnant on 3 of them. Truthfully, though, I don't think they helped us much. Unless you have a cervical issue, they aren't really boosting your odds that much. And, ours were OOP too.
Here is my thing - if you are going to be on injectible drugs and are OOP for the meds, I would consider doing one or two IUI's, and then moving on. The ONLY reason we did 6 IUI's is because my meds were covered, so they were only about $700 each cycle. However, if I were having to pay OOP for my meds each time, we would have moved to IVF much sooner. I've now spent half of what an IVF cycle would cost and am still not pregnant.
Also....I saw your post a few days ago about paratubal cysts. My RE kept seeing them on my sonograms, but said not to worry. When we decided to go ahead with the lap, he found that I had one on each tube. He said that they were like little 'fishing weights' and could have been dragging my tubes down, out of position to catch an ovulated egg. He removed them, and I got pg the next cycle, but had another c/p. We've been trying on our own the last 3 months and no luck. If you are planning to have a lap to check for endo or other issues, you can get them removed, but if you're moving to IVF, I wouldn't worry about them. I got pg 3 times before we removed them, so I don't think they were a huge barrier.
I guess I should check for sperm antibodies and do a post-coital (this is going to be weird, our RE is 1 hr away - how does that work?)....
the issue is I got pg once on clomid with a thin lining with twins? How the hell does that happen if I have CM issues or my paratubals are getting in the way (both eggs came from the same side with a 3 cm paratubal)? I know my cm was way drier on clomid than femara and I used mucinex the clomid cycle we got pg....I never had cm issues when I ovulated on my own...with femara I also had plenty of it.....
sescms - I agree with you - both of us got pg (you many times) with the paratubal there - if they really were a problem, then why would we have gotten pg?
