2nd Trimester

Anyone else notice way more c sections lately?

It seems like everyone i know who has had a baby in the last year has had a c section. For various reasons. The only friend who didn't have one was threatened with one if she didn't push the baby out in the next 3 pushes. Nothing wrong, just she was tired and had been pushing for a while and starting to lose her energy. It lit a fire under her and she pushed the baby out no problem, with renewed energy.

I am very afraid of a c section, and the plan is that we will only go that route if my or baby's life is in danger. But I feel like lately our hospital has been churnign out c sections left and right.....it scares me!

Re: Anyone else notice way more c sections lately?

  • Hmmm, I am the opposite. I know very few people who have had c-sections. I have however heard that they are done at higher rates if you deliver at a teaching institution, not positive that is true, but I was told that by my OB.

  • Not my experience. Of my friends and coworker I am the only one out of 20 births that had a c-section. DS1 was breech and I had no other options. DS2 will have to be a c-section too.

  • I hope i'm not flamed for this, because it's just my opinion, and with no factual evidence to back it up.  (That's my disclaimer) :o

But, I think that more and more hospitals and OB's are turning to c-sections faster for fear of malpractice suits if anything goes wrong.  That's why I went with MW's they have a lower rate of c-sections.

Also, with ob's, there is more of a chance of induction, or medicine intervention all which can increase chances of c-sections.

The hospital I'm going to be delivering at has a very low C/S rate, as opposed to the other hospital's in the area.

  • This is why I am going with a midwife this time around, I was very, very close to a c-section last time after a very lengthy induction.
  • Me too!  Everyone I know lately has had a c-section.  Strange.

I am hoping it is an absolute last resort for me.

  • Quite a few of my friends/co-workers that delivered in our big local hospital have had c-sections after failed inductions.  My friends that used birth centers delivered naturally, that's why I'm going with a midwife in a birth center...

  • I just found out through a reputable parenting magazine that our county publishes that the state of Florida is ranked second in the nation for the number of c-sections performed.  Apparently there is a huge push by Doctors to do c-sections due to the larger payout from insurance companies.... nice.  Thankfully, my OB clearly told me on my 1st appointment with him that he will not do a c-section unless absolutely necessary.  I trust him.

You shouldn't be flamed for this.  Your opinion is supported by the literature.

I was just about to say the same thing.  There actually is evidence of this.

  • lol Thanks.  I've heard it numerous times, (from reputable sources) but never seen a written evidence. So I didn't want to be accused of giving false info as real info.  :o)

Have you looked up your hospital's c-section rate? And asked your OB about his/her c-section rate?

I'm bypassing a hospital that's 5 mins away from my house (literally, I could walk there while in labor) in favor of one that could be up to an hour away during rush hour. The reason? The nearby hospital has the HIGHEST c-section rate of any hospital in my metropolitan area. (And, I might add, above-average rates of maternal or fetal complications.) The hospital that's further away is known as being one of the most natural-birth friendly hospitals in my metropolitan area. Plus, I'm seeing midwives, whose c-section rate is 0%, because they can't do c-sections Smile They would have to refer me to an OB in their practice.

There are huge local variances in c-section rates, so if you really want to avoid one, you should make sure you find a provider and a hospital who are in line with your thinking.
