Mine is no longer doing drowsy but awake. The second I put him down he is completely awake like he was never asleep kicking, rolling, talking. Now I have to get him totally asleep and sometimes that doesn't even work, he wakes up after like 5 mins. 4 month wakeful go away!!!
When it was working, I'd lay him down when he couldn't keep his eyes open but was still awake
Usually after DS gets his last bottle of the day his eyes are really droopy and he's almost asleep (sometimes he's actually in a light sleep). After that I burp him and change him (if he's not already in his PJs), then swaddle him; all that action wakes him up a little bit. That's when I put him down, put my hand on his chest/belly, tell him to have sweet dreams, etc. He usually looks at me, smiles a little, turns his head, and goes right to sleep.
for us its after awake time when he starts to show sleep cues.. about five minutes after he starts rubbing his eyes and yawning we put him in his sleep sack and put him down.
we follow a sleep/eat/play cycle througout the day - so it's pretty easy to tell when they are getting drowsy... by what time it is, b/c they nap pretty regularly, and once they stop enjoying their wake time- when they stop being smiley and start to show signs of agitation or being sleepy- rubbing eyes, yawns, not looking you in the eye, etc.
i do not wait until they are crying/fussing... by then, it's to late and it's really hard to get them down b/c they are overtired and pissed off
