Home Owners: Make Me Feel Better About Renting

Tell me why having a house isn't all it's cracked up to be...

We were supposed to buy a house within the next couple months (before 12/1). We have no debt, a nice savings account and a down payment. Also, we got preapproved for way more than we want to borrow.

DH got laid off last week.

::watches dream of buying a house in the foreseeable future fade away::

I feel like we will be living an apartment for the rest.of.our. lives.

  • You don't have to worry about paying almost $10K for a foundation problem less than 2 years after buying your house??? How's that? :)

  • While I love our home, there are a crapload of unexpected costs that just pop up.  Plus, having a yard = hiring a gardener or mowing a lawn.  So you spend a bunch of time and/or $ having to maintain a yard.  I feel like DH and I had a lot more free time when we lived in an apartment.

  • dont know where you live but at least you wont have to use all your savings for property taxes. CA homeownership sucks!
  • You have to pay to fix everything yourself, it sucks and it gets expensive.  If something were to go wrong with your place all you have to do is make a phone call.
  • You're not stuck in a city you don't want to be in because your condo lost $100k over the past 4 years. =(

  • you can upgrade to a bigger apt when your lease is up. We are stuck until someone buys our house to upgrade.. Im about to suffocate!

  • There are so many unexpected expenses with owning a house!  Especially when you first purchase.  For instance, you have to buy a ladder, lawn care items, and more furniture (if your house is larger than your apt was, which is usually the case).  There's no landlord to call when the dishwasher breaks or the toilet leaks, you either have to fix it yourself or call a professional - and then pay for it.  Home ownership is expensive!

That being said, I love owning our house.  :)  Sorry about your DH losing his job, I hope things work out for you guys!

  • There is always a list of things to do (minor and major) to fix or upgrade the house and yard that take lots of time, energy, and money ON TOP of normal housework.  I warn all my friends to not rush into a house because they can then say goodbye to their free time.
  • omg - lemme tell you. we just bought a house and it is a money pit. we need to now get an electrician to fix the back where our stove is going so we can take out the existing artifact and put in our new one. we are also ignoring an asbestos ceiling - pray it doesn't fall down on us - and are waiting to replace EVERY window

i will miss having maintenance with our rented apartment

  • It has already been said, but I'll second...

*you have to maintain everything & pay for it on top of the mortgage, no phone call to the office
    *homeowner taxes
*depreciating home value in the current market (we've owned 2 years and in that time the townhouse has lost $80,000 in value)

    and I'll add...
*homeowner's insurance costs us a lot more than renter's

  • I got one: We just moved in about 6 months ago into our first home... the "homeboys" have taken over the block and we CANNOT STAY HERE. We are looking to rent out our place and RENT a house or condo until we can sell it! IS that not the craziest crap ever?
