3rd Trimester

Second thoughts about breastfeeding (vent)

I'm really conflicted on the issue.  There are good sides to both, but what is making me sway towards FFing is that I cannot stand my boob size.  It's really shallow in a way, but my boobs are hurting me and my bra straps cut into my shoulders.  I don't see how I could deal with that for another year.

Will the nurses at the hospital (a big breastfeeding hospital) treat me bad/different if I don't breastfeed?

  • How big are you now? You may or may not grow much, and the right bra can make a huge difference. I used to have a ton of pain, but now nothing...and I'm a G/H cup.

  • Honestly, if they do treat you any differently, they don't have good bed-side manner.

Just make sure you are clear right away that you don't want to do it. If you say something like that you aren't sure if you want to or not, they might pressure you to try, try, try and not give up. I think it's better to let them know for sure one way or the other.

  • Breastfeeding is a personal choice.  Make sure you educate yourself about the pros/cons of both and make a choice that's best for you and your baby.  Good luck!
  • The choice is yours and if you can't stand the pain and don't want to do it, why do it? I mean, like everything in pregnancy, it is YOUR choice no matter what anyone says (on here, at the hospital, in your family, etc.). So long as you make the decision you feel is best, why worry about anyone else?

Have you tried a nursing bra in a bigger size? Maybe that'd help the discomfort all around?

  • Can you just get a bra that fits properly and is supportive???
  • Get a new bra, Amy. :)
  • They might... it really varies. GL deciding what to do! It is definitely a tough decision!

i agree with this.  it sounds like you just need the right bra size.  if you really want to breastfeed for the health benefits, i definitely wouldn't let breast size discourage you.  but if you do make the personal decision to formula feed instead, don't let the nurses at the hospital harass or upset you.  Likely they might try to talk you out of it, but ultimately it is your decision.

  • They definitely shouldn't treat you differently. But I do wonder if you'll regret not at least trying it at first? Even a few days will be beneficial to both you and LO. I'm not judging or anything, just throwing it out there!!

  • your boobs don't stay big the entire time you breastfeed.  as your baby eats less, you will start to produce less.  honestly, my overall boob size shrunk after i was finished breastfeeding.

  • I understand your feelings because I am in the same boat as far as size, discomfort.  However, there is nothing better for your baby.  You don't have to BF for an entire year, but the first few weeks are important if you are able to do it.  Talk to the lactation consultant at your hospital about your concerns.  I'm sure she has dealt with this before.  However, as the PP said, this is a personal decision, so don't take any disrespect in the hospital if you decide against it.
  • I was a B pre-preg and now I am busting out of my DD.  I bought a nice bra that is made special for bigger cup sizes.  Maybe I will try another bra before I decide...I just can't imagine being in pain for the next year though.

edit: Good point about just doing it for a few weeks though.

  • You could always try it. I plan on trying. I am not commiting myself to anything but that. Worst case scenario I only do it for like a month, oh well right. Baby got the good stuff for a bit and I gave it a try if he switches to formula he switches. I may try it and love it and we keep it up. I won't beat myself up either way but I figure its sorta the reason we have breasts so i will atleast try. Big Smile
  • I'm still conflicted on what to do as well.

I'm leaning towards the formula because honestly I have enough stress in my life.

The drs. at my hospital/clinic are borderline Breast Feeding Mafia Members.

    I'm just standig strong.

Do what you want. No one reason for or against is right or wrong, it's a personal choice.

i would definitely try for a new bra first...go to a specialty shop, even, & see if they can help you.

don't make yourself miserable for a year over it, though..."if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy," and that includes baby.

if i were in your shoes, i would probably suck it up for the first 6 - 8 weeks, at least while i'm on maternity leave, and if i couldn't stand it at that point, let it go.

  • If it helps at all, my boobs stayed the same.

    ?

Only the first month or so, when my supply was regulating and i would be engorged, that's when they were "big". But even then, it was more that they were rounded and hard, not so much bigger.?

This - I was a 36F pre-pregnancy and I've never had a doubt about BFing due to my bust... a well fitting bra, no matter what size, is well worth the $$$.

Did you get a fitting or did you just buy a bra off the rack? Go to a specialty store if you can (or Nordstroms) and get a proper measurement/fitting.

What do you wear -- a D cup? I wear a G (as in D, E/DD, F, *G*) and I have no pain. Sounds like you just need a better bra. Chances are it won't be cute, but it will be comfortable. Stay away from VS. They aren't supportive at all. Honestly -- ask an older person where they shop.

Aside from that: breastfeeding is a personal choice. Making an informed decision is fine. I would never breastfeed if I thought I was in for a 6 months of back pain.

I was a B and now I'm about out of my DD...I guess F is where I'll be if I grow a little more.

  • I was a DD before I got pregnant. They haven't grown too much during pregnancy (thank goodness). There are certainly comfortable, supportive bras out there for us bigger chested gals. It just takes a TON of looking and trying on (which can be frustrating). I just figure it's what's best for my baby so I've decided to breast feed.

  • BF will make your boobs bigger, BUT when that baby weight you've put on for the past 9 months starts to come off your boobs will shrink! My advice would be to TRY it! Don't just FF from day 1, you & your baby may really enjoy BF.

If you are thinking of getting re-fitted I suggest asking an LC if there is a store they recomend for getting fitted at this time. There is one that I had never heard of by my mall until my girlfriends told me about it and they specialize in fitting pregnancy. Hopefully you can find a place like that to find a bra that doesn't hurt, which ever way you decide. Good luck on the decision too.

  • It's not a big deal if you don't, seriously. ?Everyone says it makes smarter, healthier, blahblahblah babies...?

The only babies in my family that were BF are *always* sick, no lie. They have allergies, they are always in the hospital, just constantly sick.

My cousin, 5, just began kindergarten today and they're talking about moving her to 1st grade, and she was FF.

Do it if you want, but don't let someone try to guilt you into doing it. ?I FF and the nurses didn't say anything to me about it. Ever.?

?Oddly enough, the only person that said something to me about it was my Aunt's husband. It was weird.??

  • If you're already swayed from breastfeeding for your own comfort, then it won't work for you.  It's very difficult at first, and you need to be 110% in it for it to be successful.
  • Motherhood has nursing bras that provide good support.  I'm an E there and feel quite comfortable in the bra.  I agree with PPs - stay away from VS since their bras are sexy, but not as supportive as you'll need.

Another perspective ... I lost 3/4 of my pregnancy weight in the first two weeks and was back in my pre-pregnancy fat jeans within 3 weeks.  I was on almost bedrest restrictions due to recovering from pre-e and blood loss, so I attribute all the weight loss to breastfeeding.  That being said, it is a very personal choice and nobody should fault you for whatever you decide.

  • You may want to try a minimizer bra, too, in the meantime.  I have been big my whole life and have had back pain.  Certain bras work better than others and I can feel it at the end of the day if I wear a less supportive bra.  You should try a minimizer bra.  I love these and they are available mostly everywhere.  They push the boobs closer to the body and support them really well.  I think because they are closer to the body, it is less on the back.  I am not sure if they are going to be good for breastfeeding (don't know if they are conducive), but in the meantime they may help your current back pain.  All the major brands make them, too.
Either way, you have to do what works for you.  GL!

  • You can try a new bra (& I rec that anyway) but I'm going to be honest...with big breasts that are HEAVY breasts, a bra won't make that much difference.

I spent years & loads of money trying to find a bra to make me comfy & never found one...even in the specialty stores.  Back pain is nothing to poo-poo or shrug off.

BUT everyone's body is different.  You know my stance on FFing from the start & Lord knows you won't here anything naysaying FF from me :)

  • Try a new bra as numerous posters have mentioned.  Also no one really mentioned pumping as an option to FF. It doesn't really solve the problem of having big boobs but you can pump when you begin to feel uncomfortable instead of waiting for baby to be hungry. All the benefits from breast milk and Daddy can take that 3 am feeding once in a while.

Whatever works best for you and your baby, be it FF'ing, BF'ing or EP'ing, do it. GL
