uggh...just had to tell my boss i'm having "health issues"

my boss has a tendency to send me off on last minute trips that last anywhere between 3 days to a week. i'm the only one she does this to because she trusts me, but also because i don't have any children so i'm unattached. i told her i had to check my schedule before i could say yes and she didn't like that answer. so, i had to tell her i'm having health issues that requires lots of testing and treatment, all of which the timing can't be planned out way ahead of time. we're just in the process of our initial testing with our RE, but they're already suggesting IUI. so, i know i won't be able to travel like i did before.

i knew it was going to come to this, but it came out of nowhere. i made a point of not saying anything about fertility and kept it very vague - she most likely wouldn't see it enough to get in the way of work. no fun.

    Sorry it came down to you telling your boss.  I am fairly new to the board, and just went through almost the same thing with my boss yesterday.  I have to leave early tomorrow for a CD3 ultrasound for PCOS, and then again in early September for our initial appt with the RE, so I had to mention my medical issue.  I didn't say anything about infertility.  I just said doctors, but still it feels awkward to draw that kind of attention to yourself, particularly when (like you said) your boss seems to like you and knows she can count on you for a lot of things.  I was afraid it would effect how she views me as an employee, but so far she seems ok.  Good luck!

    Ugh, I shiver at the thought of having to tell my boss. I definitely won't say anything about infertility because my boss is the one that you tell stuff to if you want the whole place to know. But, she also assumes, so if I get to the point where I'm having to take off work a lot, I'll probably wind up telling her before she goes and tells everybody I'm pregnant (like she did with a co-worker)

    Well if you do wind up doing IF treatment you may wind up having to tell your boss a little bit more. When you start meds for an IUI or IVF cycle they want you back usually every 2-3 days so you can be heading there up to 3 times during the work week and you don't know until the day of when you have to go back again because it depends on how u respond to the meds.

     I did IVF 2 years ago to have DD and I was upfront with my manager and told her what was going on. I felt comfortable telling her and also felt i needed to give info. since i'd be leaving the office so regularly for appts. I also have a very early shift and basically needed to go to work, leave for about 1.5 hrs to go to RE and then come back.

      I'm now in the process of another IVF TTC #2 and I am at the same job, but different manager - this time a guy. Again I was upfront and told him what the deal was and how it was handled last time. He and my other new manager were totally fine with it and have let me go to my appts. as needed and make up the time.

     Good luck with whatever you decide to do but just be prepared that your boss may ask for more information when you're needing to go to dr. appts on a regular basis.
