Couch Sleeping

Two things.

Does anyone else get the television commercial with the mom who is sleeping on the couch with her baby? My heart sinks every time the commercial is on.

Whenever I fall asleep on the couch (by myself), when DH wakes me up, I instinctively think I've fallen asleep holding Paige and I freak out, trying to find her. I have never, ever fallen asleep with her, but obviously it's a deep rooted fear in my head. And I mean, every time, I jolt awake with the same reaction. Probably from the commercial.

  • I hate that commercial.  I know that bad stuff happens when it is done incorrectly, but it seems like a co-sleeping smear campaign.
  • Someone told me about it. It sounds like it's pretty over the top, but I haven't seen it.  I'm sorry it's freaked you out so much.  Kinda makes me mad that it's done that to you.

I have snoozed sitting up with Jake on my chest and it's so sweet.  I guess maybe it's not that safe.

    Yup, completely agree.

And, as gruesome as it is, and I hate going into detail... She's laying facing the back of the couch with the baby between her and the back. I mean, is that intelligent?

And speaking of... Locally, there is a story about a woman who was a guest at someone's house, she slept on the couch with her baby, who suffocated, and is now suing the homeowners for wrongful death by not providing an adequate sleep place for her baby. Makes me SICK.

  • I've seen it and it makes me cry.  Now I make Jason turn it off when it's on.  The very first time I had no idea what was coming - I was so shocked to watch it!

  • I haven't seen it thank God.  I have been on another board, though, where two women admitted that they fell asleep with their babies on them in the middle of the night when they went to feed them or what not and both their babies fell off once they the moms fell asleep.  Of course, sleep deprivation didn't help and one of them mentioned it a few months after it happened (it took her awhile to deal with the mommy guilt even though it was just an accident and the baby was fine) and the other one piped up in that post that she had that happen to her, as well.  Anyways, it scares me.
  • I haven't seen that commercial. :(

I haven't seen the commercial, but I had that same reaction the other day when DH woke me up (from my bed).  So scary!  We've definitely laid her on our chests while together and watching tv, but we won't do it alone or just to cat nap.  It makes me nervous.

  • That commercial gives me chills every time.  I  have encountered the aftermath of the exact situation at work.  Absolutely heartbreaking.
  • I've never seen the commercial, but I'm sure it would upset me.  When the boys were small both Chris and I would wake up and sometimes freak out because for some reason we thought we had fallen asleep with them on us or in our bed(I guess it comes from being exhausted).  Now that they've gotten older we don't do it anymore, but do wake up on occasion with two little boys who have managed to sneak into our bed in the middle of the night without waking us...
  • I hate that commercial, makes me so sad. I couldn't imagine. I did sleep with Gracie a few times, but she was older and I wouldn't fall compeletely asleep.

I wake up freaking out a lot thinking Gracie has fallen off the bed. I have grabbed DH a few times in bed screaming b/c I have dreams of her falling off something and me trying to catch her. Hate them.
