Trying to Get Pregnant

What Testing before the 1 Year Mark?

I know that all insurance companies are different so I am going to put a call into my HMO but I was wondering what, if any, testing did you have done before the 1 year mark at your regular OB?  I was at the OB last week and she said that once I was referred to an RE (after 12 months) that they would run bloodwork and other tests.  Can't they run bloodwork now?  Aren't there things that they can rule out before the RE?

  • The closest RE to us is 3 hours away. My OB/GYN does everything.

  • none, I'm only 25 and my dr wouldn't see me again until a year had passed.  I have regular cycles and it looks like I'm O'ing pretty consistently.

I know other girls have had SA's, bloodwork, etc., but usually they are experiencing some difficulty (short LP, whatever).  You dr. will let you know what they are willing to do.  Also, you can get a summary of what is included in your insurance coverage.  We only get 5000 in IF for life, so I'm not in a rush to use it up if I don't have to.

  • My OB ran the test and when she got the results then she sent me over to an RE! I hate the waiting game... GL...
  • I just did some testing today, and we're before the 1 yr mark.  I did CD21 bw and an ultrasound.  And DH is being sent for an SA.  I went to the DR because last cycle was a monster.  She decided to start some testing now because of my cycles.  We have no current plans to go to an RE.  GL to you!

  • You should definitely be able to get CD3 bloodwork now. The only problem is that not all OB's are as good at interpreting the CD3 results as RE's, who deal with the numbers all the time. So, if there is something subtle showing up in you BW, your OB may not see it (this happened to me). That said, you could easily rule out any major problems by getting CD3 bloodwork now and it will save you a cycle if/when you do go to an RE because you won't have to wait for AF to start to get the tests.

  • My gyn ran limited bloodwork, but then again it wasn't clear if I was ovulating so I also had an HCG.  DH had an SA done as well but he also had chemo a few years back.  His dr may be someone to talk to about having your DH tested.  If you are ovulating regularly I don't see the point in being tested before DH gets tested, but that is just me.
  • You really need to check your coverage (I know you said you plan on it) because once you start any kind of testing, even with the OB, you run the risk of being labeled IF. This is not a label I would want to have if I could avoid it.

  • My ob/gyn wouldn't test anything before the 1 year mark.  Then he did cd3 and 7dpo b/w, a SA, and transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds, then sent me to the RE (who redid the b/w and the SA)

  • Depending on if you end up going to an RE, you may have to repeat all tests done by your OB.  My OB referred me straight to the RE because the RE wants to run their own tests.  I am just under the one year mark, but I had irregular cycles.

  • Thanks for all of the good info.  She did give us the info for DH to go and get an SA (he has a PPO) so I guess we will start there and I will also find out about my insurance coverage.
