Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

? for a pregnant friend

she is pregnant with baby #2. At her first apt they told her she was about 12 weeks. Well she went back to the dr yesterday and an ultrasound was done. The Tech could not find the HB so scheduled her for a DNC. She is not bleeding nor hurting ect and wondering if just because the tech did not see the HB if it was normal to sch. a DNC right away. I have no idea I have never been through this type of thing. Friends biggest fear is that this DNC will be done on a live baby. Like I said I have no idea, I have been blessed enough to have never lost a baby. What do you think? Her other concern is the DR never came in to check for a HB

Re: ? for a pregnant friend

  • She needs to talk to her Doc, maybe have a 2nd u/s to confirm.  It's not likely they would scedule and d&c with out knowing for sure, but she should be sure too. It would be hard to live with if you were always wondering "what if".

  • I agree with PP.  If she has questions she should speak with the Dr. before having the D&C.

  • I would have her get a second opinion.  My dr automatically requests another u/s by someone other than him to verify what he may have missed.

  • I have had 5 losses and never scheduled a d/c I have let it go naturally. I was given the choice. She needs to talk with her Doc a tech cannot make that call.
  • I agree.  She needs to speak to her doctor.  When the tech found problems with our little one, she was not that one that scheduled the induction.  We talked with the doctor on-call at the center who recommended it and then had it confirmed with my personal OB.  It was my OB that did the scheduling.

  • I'm so sorry for your friends loss....    (((((HUGS)))))) to her....

This just happened to me over a week ago... her Dr. should have come in and talked with her. Not all Dr.'s will need to confirm what the stenographer didn't see, especially if they have done her u/s for a very long time and still found nothing. Doing an u/s they should have found the hb at 6 weeks... And if they have done her u/s transvag then they should have deff heard a hb.

When I went in for my u/s, we were in there forever! She took a ton of picture's to measure the baby and to see how it grew and she also checked like crazy for a hb. There was nothin there =( Our baby was measuring 8w2d and I was 11 weeks along...So we talked w/ my Dr. and he scheduled me for a d&c the very next day since my body was showing no signs of m/cing.

hope her procedure goes well, t&p for your friend

  • At 12 weeks plus, it should be quite easy to see the heartbeat.    Additionally, the baby may have measured undersized at this most recent US, indicating that it had stopped growing.  She should contact her Dr. for more details if she is uncertain, and perhaps ask for a repeat U/S to confirm.  They may automatically do a repeat U/S just prior to the D&C while she is knocked out (they use the U/S throughout the procedure to guide them)
  • Yup... she needs to request another u/s to confirm demise.

She also needs to ask the size/age of the fetus.

If she knows she's supposed to be 12 weeks along and the fetus only measures 8 weeks AND has no HB that will help give her the closure that it really is over.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
