Referral from OB or FP for RE?

How's that for a bunch of initals?! lol, I'm seeing a family practioner in a week and I was thinking of maybe asking for the referral to see the RE (just in case we decide to go in that direction anytime soon), since we need to see someone new since moving and my insurance requires one.  But I got to thinking, do I need to see my ob for that?

 

Anyone know?

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever!     I'm going to go ahead and say no. ?But I am OOP so that might have been why I didn't need a referral. ?

    It depends on your insurance.  My insurance when I first started with RE required that I have a referral from my FP.  My second year's insurance required no referral and my insurance coverage for this year requires a referral from my OB.  I switched each year to get the best IF coverage for what we were doing that year.

    I think it really depends on your insurance policy. I would call and ask if they have a rule about who can refer to an RE.

    I would think that a primary care physician could refer you given your history. I would ask and see if they will do it. I had my OB give me a referral to my RE via an e-mail. I did not need additional testing, etc to know that I needed a RE :) Good luck!!!!
    It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

    I would just call your insurance co and ask.  They could be specific about who gives the referral, but maybe not.....every plan is different!  Good luck:)

    I totally forgot about it but I did have a referral from my primary doc.  It was easier than getting in to see my OB.

    I agree that you just need to check with your insurance... also I recommend Fertility Centers of Illinois :)  and if you need a new OB out here I have an AWESOME one.
