Success after IF

Name Brand vs. Generic Formula?

I'm thinking of trying to switch DD to generic formula since she's pretty much 100% formula fed now since I'm back at work and is eating so much.  I'm wondering what the difference really is between name brand and generic.  I've compared labels and it seems like more of the ingredients are the same and the generics are WAY cheaper.  She also seems to have some constipation issues right now with the name brand stuff - maybe the switch would be good for her system??

Anyone have a successful switch or a not-so successful switch?  DD is on Similac Sensitive right now.

TIA!

Re: Name Brand vs. Generic Formula?

  • I was reading in Baby Bargains that the FDA monitors the make of formula and that the ingredients need to be the same. So there is not difference, except for price.

  • I am not sure what generic brand is the same as Similac but Target brand is the same as Enfamil.  We tried it and DS had a ton of spit up, we ultimately ended up going back to the brand name, I don't know why it caused so many problems.

We switched back to Enfamil and the spit up stopped.

    Good luck with the switch!

  • We switched from Similac Isomil to Target brand soy. It was fine. The Target brand almost dissolved a little better. I would suggest doing it gradually, like three scoops of your brand and one of generic for a couple of days, and move up from there!
  • I just switched DD from Similac Sensitive to Target brand. We've had no problems at all. It's seriously $10 cheaper/can and you get (slightly) more in each can!

You might buy a can and then do 50/50 mix, see how she does and then switch.

  • we used Target brand for our twins the entire time and there were no problems. I asked my Pedi about it and he said go ahead! We saved $120/month!
  • We use the generic from Sam's club and have had no issues at all. Love the price!
  • My pedi suggested using generic formula... he said they are pretty much all the same. We haven't switched yet, but we're going to once I stop breastfeeding (we supplement at each feeding anyway). Target brand is almost $10 cheaper than what we use now!

  • We have used BRU brand in the past and DS has not had any trouble with it. We usually use the Enfamil because DS is now on Enfamil AR and it is hard to find that kind in the generic brands.

  • I recently switched from Similac advance to parents choice (walmart) and haven't noticed any diff.  DD eats well and has no problems.

  • E was on nutramigen, and there was no generic, but once we switched to gentlease, we tried both walmart and target brands... Walmart seemed to be a little bit harder to digest, but target is perfect! we still use it! and at $14.99 a can versus $26.49, that is great!
