Umbilical Hernias

My 6 week old LO seems to have an umbilical hernia.  It looks okay, just like a large, squishy "outie".  All that I've read says it's pretty harmless and should close on it's own in a couple of months.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I'm going to call the pedi, but I have already called him for 2 other things last week. (I'm a worrier)  Just wondering if any one knew about it.

  • My ds still has his but its gone down a lot. The pedi has never been concerned, he says if it doesnt go away by a year we will start looking into it more.

  • One of my boys has this too. Pedi not concerned about it right now; they usually resolve themselves on their own.

This.  My pedi has never been concerned as it has continued to go down over the months.  He takes a look at it each monthly appointment, but no big deal.  I don't think it's worth calling about, but have them take a look at the next appointment.

  • DH had two of them as an adult... The dr said he is prone to them ... they have to do with the muscle that covers your stomach.  Dr also said he may have had them as a kid but never had a problem.  Ask Dr. if it will afect him when he gets older.  It was pretty painful for him b/c every time he ate, and needed to poo, he would get major pain of it passing thru his intestines b/c the intestines were pinched in a hole in the muscle.

  • My SILs preemie DD has one and the pedi told her that it mostly likely go away one its own and just keep an eye on it.
