Success after IF

Daycare should have noticed, right?

Haylie came home from daycare with a bite mark on her arm.  I didn't notice it until bath-time, but it was a pretty deep mark.  No broken skin, but it was hard enough to bruise.

Daycare never said anything about it.  It seems like they should have noticed, right? I mean, she would have cried.

I mentioned it this morning when I dropped her off, but they just said they didn't see anything.  I'm kinda upset that no one even noticed.  I know kids bite, but someone should have noticed.  Am I overreacting?

  • No you are not overreacting they should have noticed and they were at fault for not noticing.  True bites happen but some can be worse than others.

DS got bit at daycare and when I came to pick him up they had an accident report for me to sign etc.  The fact that they blew this off as if it was no big deal is kind of concerning to me.

  • Nope.  I work in one and my advice to you is to speak to the director.  A bite mark needs to be cleaned and taken care of to prevent spreading of germs and if they didn't write anything or tell you, they didn't know about it or do anything about it or they knew and cleaned it, just didn't tell you.

I wouldn't be as upset about the bite as I am that no one told me.  Can you put some ice on it?

  • They should have noticed it.  I would've been ticked too.  She would've cried if it was hard enough to bruise her arm and she was probably holding her arm where she was bit because it was hurting her.  I also know kids bite and it's going to happen whether we like it or not, but I think they should've been on top of it and definitely told you were the bruise came from.

I get upset when they don't point out his owies to me.  That way I can watch them to make sure they don't get worse.  You should speak to the director about that...I think.  Just if nothing else to make sure it doesn't happen again.

  • I have a biter and there is no way a bite goes un-noticed in this house.  Now granted at a daycare there are more kids, but still.  Like you said she would have cried.  Whenever Luke bites John I know instantly based on his cry.  So even if they don't know your daughter's cries that well I'm sure it would have been at least an I'm hurt cry.  I then look John over head to toe to find the bite and make sure to clean and ice it.  And that's from his own brother.

I would speak to the director.  Just say you really would like to know before taking your daughter home if she has been biten/fallen down/etc....  Anything that might cause a significant bruise or marking.  I used to work in a day care and that was always a must.  And the biter's parent got a note home.  They actually had a policy if they bit more than x amount of times in a week, I think they were out of the day care but it was like 30 times or something like that.

  • When N got bitten a few weeks ago, I got a written report that I had to sign, and I couldn't even see the bite mark. I would definitely try to get to the bottom of the situation with the director. Poor Haylie!
  • Yup.... they should have noticed.

I'd be talking to a supervisor about that one.
