Am i being unreasonable?

I bought a bike trailer (IN Step) at a kids resale shop, asked about instructions (print them online) and about the trailer itself (making sure it had all applicable parts, etc).  Get home on Saturday and DH tries to attach it to my bike, while reading instructions we realize that the trailer hitch is missing so we can't attach it to my bike.  I immediately call the store and very kindly explain what happened, the sales clerk took my name and # and said she would have the owner call me.  No one called Sat or Sun, i call this afternoon, still very polite and friendly and speak to one of the owner's, however he informs me that his wife handles these matters and will have her call me back.  She calls just now and without asking me what happened, simply says "all sales are final".  I explained that i have been a customer for 1 1/2 years and understand that while all sales are final i believe i had a reasonable expectation that the trailer they were selling would have the parts that went with it to make it work.  She told me i could call InStep and rudely said that i should have read my receipt because "all sales are final".  WTH!!  So now i am stuck with a bike trailer that i can't use.  I am seriously pissed!  Is there anything i can do?  DH says it's my fault for not knowing that the hitch was needed before buying the trailer (ya know cause i've bought so many of them).

Re: Am i being unreasonable?

  • No, you're not being unreasonable. I would expect them to sell something will all the parts or to state that it's missing something and sell it cheaper to make up for whatever is missing. I'd be pissed at that lady for being such a b!tch and I'd have to kick DH in the balls for telling me it's my fault. Sorry.

Was it Once Upon a Child or Kid to Kid in the Midcities area? I'm curious now.

  • Finders Keepers, that's what really pissed me off and i even told the woman that i have recommended them to lots of people (i know i've recommended them on here several times) and that now i feel like i would be doing a dis-service by NOT telling them of this situation.  I certainly would not have paid $65 for a bike trailer that i need to buy a part for when it only costs $100 brand new!

I've sold them several things and one time i was missing a decoration from a swing and she said she would have to give me $10 less than normal because the toy was missing.  So if she did that to me, i am 99.9% sure that she shorted the person who sold her the bike trailer as well which is totally understandable had she actually bought the the hitch and provided it when i was buying it.  All i was hoping she would do is say " wow i'm sorry, i don't know how that happened, but let me work on it and get back to you", nope instead i get a final sale bullcrap.

  • I would be super pissed. Make sure you tell her that you will not be using her store anymore. In this economy she should be grateful for customers, not driving them away.

  • Never been there and I won't go there now. That's such a crappy way to treat someone and a crappy way to run your business.
  • Sallie, i told her that not only is she losing me as a customer, but that i would be telling my friends about my experience.  My coworker happened to be in my office when i was talking with the owner and she was so irritated for me, lol.  She actually called them up and told them that they were losing another customer from their piss poor customer service.  I was slightly embarassed because she made me cry (well the situation did, $65 is a lot to not be able to use the darn thing) and my coworker/friend made me laugh by her phone call :o)
  • No your not being unreasonable. Its one thing to buy something and change your mind, but she sold you something you can not even use.?

Post their number here and that ladies name and she will get many calls letting her know that she just lost another costumer, I for one will call. She needs to know that when you said she would loss costumers you meant it, lol. ?

I'd also let her know that you are part of a giant Mom's Group who will also not shop there as a result of her decision.

  • That's so crappy of her! She should try to make it right; either take it back or give you a partial refund. It should have stated that parts were missing. I won't be shopping there either.
  • Thanks for all the support!  Should you *choose* to call the establishment the name is Finders Keepers and their # is: 817-581-8883.
  • Wow, I'd be pissed! I agree with PPs, if I paid $65 for a bike trailer thats only $100 brand new I would expect everything to be there and working! How much does a new hitch cost? That lady is horrible. I'm sorry you had that experience!
