Newly Pregnant Teacher

Anyone else a pregnant classroom teacher? I will be starting school next week and am very nervous about the school year. I am due in April and am very worried about being on my feet up through my 9th month. I am also worried about dealing with all the symptoms while running a classroom. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Lindsey

Re: Newly Pregnant Teacher

  • I was 20 weeks when I went back last September- so the m/s didn't apply since I was pregnant in the summer. What grade do you teach?

As far as the symptoms (m/s, pee breaks, etc), I'd let another teacher, whose class is close to yours, know the situation. Perhaps he/she could look after your class, if need be. Maybe talk to the school nurse.  From time to time, I'd sit and prop my feet up on a free seat/chair. I teach 6th grade.

  • I got pregnant with my first in October of my first year teaching.  I'm due with #2 in January.  Honestly, teaching is a fairly forgiving profession as far as baby-making is concerned.  You sort of get to dictate how much you're on your feet (I teach HS, so I know that was my case, but it's a little harder if you teach litte kids), tons of your CWs are/have been pregnant and are willing to help out, etc.

I did my fair share of running out of the room to puke and freaking out about giving birth at a basketball game or prom.

I found it super helpful to tell my boss ASAP (like I told him at 5 weeks this time around) because I knew if I was missing from my room because I had to pee for the 14th time, he'd be a little miffed unless he knew what was up.

Trust me, this is not really worrying about that much.  It's much worse when you get back after baby and your first period starts and you're unprepared or you're in the middle of class when you realize your nipples leaked through your shirt.  Trust me.  :)

  • I taught until nearly 2 weeks after my due date and was fine. Towards the end, I sat a lot more than usual but it was totally fine.  I was worried about m/s but I didn't have any!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I worked right up till the end with DD.  What do you teach?  I teach HS so I could get away with putting my feet up for a little bit towards the end.  The bathroom breaks were the hardest part, but nearby teachers would cover for me.
  • I work kindergarten and was due last April.  I really didn't have any problems but when I did feel sick (not very many) I had an assistant in my class so it's not like I left my class unattended.  I was due April 15th (had her the 16th) but I stopped working April 1st because that is when we went on spring break for Easter.  The best was when I got further along and the kids were soooo excited for me.  They would draw pictures for the baby and hold them up to my tummy.

  • I teach second grade, and don't have an assistant. I am worried about bathroom breaks but am hoping to do some team teaching with my neighbor so that may help :)

  • My SIL has done this three times, teaches 4th grade on concrete floors in an urban school.  By the end she was a swollen mess, I felt so bad for her.  She wasn't really able to fight it a whole lot, her doctor's office would not give her any type of medical excuse to take early leave before the babies were born.  (They said there was no medical reason)  She just kind of had to know when to take a break, sit down, etc...

    Good luck with this!
