Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Need some advice or suggestions....

...My DD takes about 24-28 oz per day, she gets 4oz bottles so that's 6-7 bottles every 3 hours.  I was thinking of trying to condense it to 4 6oz bottles but my questions are: 1) is it too soon at 6 1/2 months and 2) how do I do it.  I know she can go more than 3 hours in between feedings b/c she sleeps longs stretches at night.  I'm doing Ferber right now and trying to slowly wean her from her night feeding, its usually at 4 - 4:30 and then she's up between 7-8.

  • Willis takes 3- 8oz during the day. I am not sure how to wean out the night feeding though, I would like to hear how that works.

  • I don't think it's necessarily that she's too young.  Abbey was down to 3 bottles by that age, not too long ago.  I think it all depends on how much she wants to eat at a time.  Between her solids & bottles, Abbey just doesn't want another bottle, going in between before she was fussing, so it just sort of disappeared by her cues.

  • I'm reading Ferber and he says to gradually reduce the ounces you give them during the night by one.  So if you usually give 4, the first night reduce to 3 and then 2 and then 1.  You can also do it every other day too.  I haven't tried it yet b/c she isn't having that great of success with Ferber so I'm going to wait to talk to the pedi at her next appt.

  • DS was still getting 6 bottles at that age.  He will not take more than 4-5 oz at a time.  We are just now consistently getting 5 oz in at a time.  I'm trying to drop from 5 bottles a day to 4.  I don't have any advice.  I am envious of all the mom's who LO's that are down to 3 bottles per day at DS's age.

Me too and that is why I'm thinking of transitioning her.  I just don't know, like your DS, if she'll take more than 4oz during a feeding.

  • DD takes four bottles a day.  I don't remember when she started eating more at a sitting but we took her lead and if she wanted more we gave her more.  We also weaned her of her night feedings with somewhat of the Ferber method.  We started with the decreasing concept but then went to CIO.  We didn't do the checks since this worked her up more so we did straight CIO.  Although it took time and was tough it worked wonders!  According to our pedi they should be able to go at least 8 hours, if not more, at this age.  I guess they get used to eating their meals in the middle of the night and you need to break them of that habit.  I know some people believe they will wean themselves when they are ready but I'm glad we weaned and she's definitely not starving when she wakes in the morning.
