Pumping and alcohol question

It's my birthday this week and a bunch of my friends and I are going out Saturday night. My mom is staying at our house and watching Madyson and I plan on leaving her bottles just in case, however, she should be in bed before I even leave the house. She goes to bed around 8:30 or 9 usually wakes between 1-2 to feed then goes back down til 5 or 6.

I should make sure I have a bottle for the 1-2 oclock feeding even if I am home by then because my breastmilk will have traces of whatever I drank that night right?

So should I also pump around then too if I'm home just to get it out of my system? I should be ok to breastfeed by 5 or 6 though I'd assume.

Re: Pumping and alcohol question

  • Pump just in case but BRU sells BM alcohol detecting strips if your that worried.

  • I have read that whatever you consume 2-6 hours before (feeding/pumping) is what goes into the breastmilk. I have drank on a couple of different occasions and have pumped and dumped twice and made sure it was at least 8hrs after last drink just to be on the safe side.
  • I don't think one night would mess with your supply but I would try to pump with any missed feeding sessions.

When DD was that age though I couldn't miss a feeding or a pump cause it hurt so bad.

  • From Dr Newman's mouth:

Alcohol is fine while breast feeding and pumping. Alcohol passes into your bloodstream and the amount that makes it into breast milk is negligible.

    Enjoy.?

  • If you're ok to drive, you should be ok to BF.  If you do decide to give a bottle at the 1-2am feeding you may want to pump to keep up your supply and be comfortable.
