GD-related: Can anyone tell me if this is dangerous or not?

Hello -

I  have a question for the GD mommas. I will ask my doctor at my next appt. but wanted to get your input based on how your doctors have advised you ...

When I started testing about 5 weeks ago my numbers were pretty good. Sometimes I would overdo it on the carbs (when I was trying to find out what my limits were) and I would get a 1 hr number in the 140s but my two hour number would drop back into the normal range (90-119). So thinking that things were pretty well under control I have been trying to stick to the diet but cheating a little here and there (1 or 2x a week - french fries are my weakness, I have been avoiding all sweets though!).

Well, this last week has been a different story (week 34). While up until now I have had a max of 2 high readings per week (usually in the 140s, not really high), this week I have had 4 meals that gave me high readings and I am starting to get a little worried (and confused! b/c some of these meals I have been able to handle before or are within the 60g carb limit.) For two of these meals I was in the 150s at 1 hour (instead of 140s) and one of these meals I was still in the 150s at 2 hours!!!! That really freaked me out!! I am wondering if this could have harmed the baby? I will do my best to avoid any elevations from this point on but I am worried about having harmed the baby this week. And I am frustrated because I really am trying to watch my diet but the rules seem to be changing and now I feel apprehensive about eating for fear of going over the limit.

Any straight talk and/or reassurances would be welcome. Thanks!!

  • First, relax.  Your baby is not going to be significantly harmed by a few high readings.

Second, the shi++y thing about GD is how it changes over time.  You placenta is getting larger and is putting more and more strain on your pancreas.  So things that were ok to eat a few weeks ago - or even a few days ago - might not work for you anymore.  This is why many ladies end up on insulin.  GD tends to get worse as your pregnancy progresses.

Just make sure that you're monitoring your sugars carefully.  And if you notice that something is giving you a spike (even if it used to be ok), try to avoid it from now on, or eat it in a much smaller portion.

Keep your doc updated with these changes, also.  It might, unfortunately, be a signal that you need interventions other than diet changes.

  • When you do notice that you have a high BS level try to take a quick 20 min walk or something active. It will make those nummbers come down alot. when I first got GD and was trying things out I had to do a lot of walking ;) also the closer you get to your due date the harder it can be to control your GD, things change all the time. Try to just add in your " free " foods if you think you are close to your carb limit.
  • I agree with the PPs. As you progress, it can get harder to manage, even if you are eating things that didn't affect your sugars dramatically before.

  • My nutritionist informed me that later in your pregnancy there is a hormone spike that can cause you to become more insulin resistant so its a possibility that that's whats going on. Also a few high numbers are not going to hurt the baby, my dr. said that its consistently high numbers over time that are cause for concern.

  • The good news is that at 37 weeks or so, things start to calm down and get easier to control...
  • 60g carbs? I'm jealous, I don't have any meals that high.

I know that some of my high readings I've immediately re-washed my hands and tested again and got significantly different numbers (I'm talking 20-30 lower). In other cases I've retested and gotten identical/near identical readings. So I would retest when you think the numbers are just crazy high for what you've eaten.

Taking a walk has never brought down my numbers - maybe it's just way too hot here for me to walk fast enough/long enough to do any good, but I know that swimming does bring down my numbers so definitely try something for exercise.
