19 month old in big girl bed?

That's not too soon, right?

I want to transition my dd out of her crib into a full size bed before her baby sister arrives.

Am I asking too much of her (and myself)?

Re: 19 month old in big girl bed?

  • I don't think so... I think it's just likely to be harder then if you did it later but I really don't see it as a big deal.

I know several kids who transitioned well before their 2nd birthdays and they were ok but I guess it all depends on the child too.?

  • We plan on transitioning DD to a toddler bed at 17 mo, before her sister arrives.  It's just something we'll have to work through with her.  I've known others to transition well before 2 yr. old also and did fine.  We'll just see how it goes.

  • DS moved at 17 months.  I'm sure it depends on the kid, but he was completely fine with it, it didn't disrupt his sleep schedule at all, and we think he actually prefers the bed to the crib Smile
  • Depends on the kid. DD moved to a twin at 16mo... but she HATED the crib. So the bed was an improvement for her (and us). Seriously it was at least a 50% improvement in her sleeping, instantaneously. We also stay with her until she's asleep, having a kid who will stay in bed to fall asleep on their own is asking more of the kid.

  • It depends on the kid.

I don't know anyone IRL that was successful in moving their child before age 2, unless they were climbing out of their crib. My friends that did it because they didn't want to buy a second crib, regretted it.

It seems as if the girls here have had success with transitioning at a young age.

Ditto this!  From what I have read on sleep habits in children, transitioning children to a toddler or full size bed is one of the top sleep mistakes parents make.  It's hard for a young toddler to understand the imaginary boundries of a bed.  It's said to wait as close to 3 yrs as possible or until safety is an issue such as climbing out of crib.

We are not transitioning DD#1, she will be 18 months when DD#2 is born.  I like knowing she is safe and confined to a crib.  We went ahead and bought a second lifetime crib.

With that said, every child is different.  Good Luck if choose to transition.

  • We moved Joseph at 14 months. It was a little rough for about a week but we put a gate in his doorway and he stays in bed just fine.  I thought it was too early but DH insisted he'd be fine.  It's nice now b/c when he wakes up he can just play in his room until we get up.  I would say try it for a few weeks.  If it doesn't work you can always move them back into a crib.

  • I just want to add that DS has no trouble staying in bed until he falls asleep.  We kiss him goodnight and leave, we don't stick around until he's out.  Sometimes he falls asleep right away, and other times he talks to himself for half an hour before going to sleep, but he never gets out of bed unless something is wrong, like he poops.
  • we put dd 1 in a bed at 15 months because she climbed out of the crib...and she has done great in the bed...

This is not the norm for kids under 2. But, some kids are ready at that age.

A friend's older son moved to a big boy bed (mattress on floor) at 18 months.  Before that, he was a cosleeper, almost exclusively.

My daughter's in a crib now, and is 19 months, and there is NO way she's ready for a big bed - she just plain would not stay in it.

  • I moved DD #1 at 18 months (3 months before her sister was born) and #2 at 17 months.  Both did awesome.  #1 never got out of bed and after 1 nap, never looked back.  #2 took a few days to transistion and does get out of bed in the morning but after about 3 nights, goes to sleep just like she did in the crib - nice and easy and STTN.
