Baby Names

I just don't get it

I am not being mean at all I really and truely just want to know why people name their kid something and their nn is not really a nn or any shorter than the full name.

John called Jack

Henry called Harry or Hank

What!?!?!?!?!

Why not name them Jack it is as good as John.

  • Yeah, I don't get it either.

  • I agree with you on some names. Names like Jack have become stand alone names in their own right. But I think some nn still need the full name.

I think it's good to give a kid options when some names like Bobby, could sound too informal and they might prefer to be Robert.

  • I can understand it if it is tradition to name the son after the dad, and the dad is John, you call the son Jack to differentiate. Otherwise I don't get it either.

  • Ok now I get it.  I really just didn't know why.  But having a few in one family makes sense.  I wish my husbands family did that we have Bud, Bud, and Bud.  Grandfather, Father, Son.

    Ditto.
  • I just dont get why people dont name their kids jack as well if that is what they are going to call them BUT i say that  for ALL nicknames! If you are going to call your daughter bella, than name her bella not isabells. I dont care the length of the name.
  • I'll never understand it either.?
