BFers, do you drink coffee?

Does it seem to affect LO? How do they sleep? I usually have a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon around 2p. She is not a good sleeper and wondering if this is why. I heard you can have a couple cups thougth. WDYT?

Re: BFers, do you drink coffee?

  • I think everyone is different.  With that said, I decided to try an ice-coffee from Starbucks and I had a TERRIBLE night.  I wont be having Starbucks regular or decaf any time soon.

However, I did have a non starbucks decaf yesterday and she was an angel!  She slept for two four hour periods last night!

  • DS hates non-decaf coffee. It makes him a total nightmare. So, until I'm not bfing, nothing but decaf for me.

  • Nope, except decaf!  I am afraid to do it.  And I drank coffee while pregnant!  I really, really miss my strong caffeinated coffee (I think decaf is icky)... it is the only reason I look forward to weaning the baby!

  • I have coffee in the morning (about 16-20 oz) and I don't think it affects her sleep. I might just be in denial, though. ;) I refuse to give up coffee - I feel like it's the one thing I'm selfish about and as horrible as it sounds, I ignore the fact that it might not be best for DD.

  • I drink 1 cup per day.  I don't have anything else to compare it to (since I've always had the 1 cup/day), but DS sleeps 4 hour stretches.
  • I made the switch to decaf after a really long night with LO when I drank a can of Pepsi. I wasn't going to risk it with coffee after that.

  • I occasionally drink coffee (maybe once every two weeks) and ds is NOT a great napper, and hasn't been in months, but he sleeps about 12 hours (waking up to eat a time or two) a night.  I haven't noticed a difference on the days I do drink it. I guess I can't complain!

I'd try to cut out coffee for 3-4 days and then see if it affects your LO's sleep, if you're really thinking it might!

  • I drink caffeine in some form everyday (usually coffee) and my DS STTN (8pm-7 or 8 am).

I think you just have to figure out if it affects your baby.

  • I've totally given up caffeine, and this may sound ridiculous, but I've been afraid to drink even decaf because I'm afraid it will affect the taste of the milk.  Any coffee makes my pee smell really strong, and I swear it even makes my sweat smell different, so I had this (unfounded?) fear it would affect the taste of the milk.  We had so many problems BF early on I didn't want to risk it so I gave up the decaf I had loved while pregnant.  It would be easy enough to test out now, but it's been so long that I don't really miss it anymore.  I know it's a stupid and pointless fear, but such is the thinking of a stressed out, overtired new mom :)
  • Wow, glad I read this. I don't drink coffee all that often and haven't since LO one born but I have been getting a Starbucks craving and was thinking I would indulge today. Defintely not going to now.  She is close to STTN and I don't want to ruin that!

  • I'm very sensitive to caffeine and I wouldn't be surprised if my daughter turns out to be too.  I have always drank decaf but have only occasionally since having LO.  I might have 1/2 cup every few weeks.  So far, I haven't seen it affect her sleep but I have it so rarely that it would be hard to tell.

If I were you, drink decaf to be on the safe side and drink it in the AM only so it doesn't affect her nighttime sleep.

  • Can't even have one cup in the morning- it keeps O up and he gets overtired and inconsolable. We had some rough days until I gave in and cut out my daily cup of coffee. Makes me wish I had given it up during the pregnancy so I wouldn't be having such a tough time now when I'm lacking sleep and being pulled in ten different directions all the time.
  • I never saw any correlation w/ caffeine and either of DD's sleeping habits. Every baby and mama is different. dd#1 was and still is an amazing sleeper. I drank ?2 cups of coffee a day. dd#2 is a horrible sleeper..I drink 2 cups of coffee a day. so.....
  • I have one cup of half coffee/half soy milk once or twice daily and it does not seem to bother LO. I also drank this combo during 2nd/3rd tri of pregnancy, which I have heard can make them less sensitive after birth.

  • I have a cup or two every morning. DD is not a good napper, although occasionally she will have a long stretch. She's a good night sleeper though. I don't think the coffee has anything to do with it. Maybe I will try a day without it and see if she naps better.

  • I haven't noticed anything and didn't with DS either.  I try to just stick to one cup in the morning like I did through most of my pregnancy.  Maybe she's already used to it???

  • I have some while I feed her in the morning. I figure she doesn't get it while I'm drinking and her next feeding is hours away so it doesn't effect her much then either.

Now coke on the other hand drives her bonkers. I'm not sure why.

  • I drink as much caffiene as I want...I haven't seen an issue. My Dr said each baby is different with this, and that each mum has to watch out for it.
