Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Those who make their own baby food...

I have a couple questions:

  1. Do you freeze your baby food in regular ice cube trays and just cover with foil or did you buy ones that have lids??
  2. I noticed on wholesomebabyfood.com that some foods will turn brown with freezing (ic pears, bananas)...did you freeze them anyways or make those fresh?
Thanks!!

Re: Those who make their own baby food...

  • I have trays with lids...they came as part of a kit "So Easy", with cookbook, etc.  I prefer it, only because it's easier than trying to get a tight wrap with plastic wrap.

I've never had a problem with pears.  As for bananas, I just break into chunks and freeze them whole, then mash once defrosted.

  • i use regular ice cube trays and stick them in the freezer. sometimes i'll cover them with plastic wrap if it's something that will take a long time to freeze, but most of the time i just stick them in the freezer uncovered.

when i'm making something that will turn brown i put lemon juice in with it to slow down the oxidation process then freeze.

  • 1- I put in ice cube trays and put that inside of a large freezer bag.

2- I only freeze bananas in big chunks.  Then I slice them right before serving for a frozen treat.  Bananas get SLIMY when they thaw out.  I don't worry too much about foods turning brown.  Oh - avocado I also freeze in chunks rather than purees.

  • 1. I use press n seal then transfer to ziplocks once frozen.

    2. foods I can mash fresh (avocado/banana/ripe pear) I did not bother freezing. The things that you can mash fresh stick with fresh.

  • I bought ice trays with lids from the Container Store.  That way I can easily stack them.

I don't worry about foods turning colors.  DS doesn't know what they're supposed to look like...

  • I thought of another! Once they are frozen in the cubes, do you take them out and put them into a freezer baggie so you can use the tray to make another food or just wait till your LO has eaten each cube in the tray?

Thanks SO much for your answers!! I am looking forward to starting this!

Banana and avocado I give fresh. I froze the pears, but she loves them even though they turned brown :) Next time, I will add a little lime or lemon juice to help slow down the browning process.

  • I put the food in a ziplock bag after it has frozen. I have such a large variety of food frozen, I'd never have room to keep it all in trays. I only have three trays that I use to freeze the food in.
    1. Both - I have the KidCo trays with lids but when I make too much food, I use the regular ice cube trays too.
    2. I make these fresh - usually make just a couple of servings.

I transfer to ziploc bags so that I can use the trays for something else.

  • forgot to mention that I cook my pears, like apples...maybe that's why they don't turn brown at all.

I also transfer the cubes to freezer bags.

Ditto everything in bold. For bananas, I just mash with a fork right before I feed them to her; I've never frozen them.
