measuring behind on ultrasound due to twins-is this possible?

I had my 1st ultrasound Thursday.  The tech saw 2 sacs, 1 was empty measuring in the 4 week range and the other was 5 weeks 4 days but no heartbeat yet (I was 6 weeks 3 days).  I assumed it was definitely a miscarriage for both, but my OB said that with 2 sacs, the measurements can be behind and actually catch up.  She also said the empty sac can also begin to grow.  I also had bloodwork done and my number doubled to 16,503 (should be between 14,760 and 29,520) so the nurse said my numbers were okay-however, she did mention the empty sac still produces HCG.  Last bloodwork was exactly a week ago at 1,845.  I have not experienced any bleeding, but have very mild cramping from time to time (not sure if it is cramping or just my stomach driving me crazy from all the news).  I am also still taking my BBT and my temps are still remaining high.  I am trying to stay positive for my ultrasound on Monday, but know there is a possibility of miscarrying both the baby and empty sac.  Has anyone heard of this or had any experience with this?

  • On our first ultrasound, each sac/baby was measuring differently and I was a little worried as to why.  The RE told me that the u/s machine can have an error of as much as  +/- 5 days because what they are measuring is so small when your that early along. At the 6 week, 0 day  u/s they warned me before hand that there was a 50/50 shot of seeing the heartbeat.

GL with your u/s tommorrow, I hope you get good news.

  • No experience with it, I didn't have beta numbers done, but wanted to wish you luck!
  • My doctor never really focused on beta numbers, but I did start out with 3 sacks (two with a heartbeat, the third without). At my 2nd ultrasound, the 3rd sack had a heartbeat, along with the other two, but was measuring behind. By the 3rd ultrasound, the sack that was measuring behind was not visible. We are now expecting twins instead of triplets.

Like your doctor said, it is SO early. Anything can happen and what's meant to be will be :o). Good luck and my thoughts are with you!
