Who actually wrote stuff down and why? I tried for like a day or two, but only because I was "supposed" to. I gave up because it was a waste of time. Tell, what's the deal with writing it down? (I'm honestly asking)
I wrote it down for the first week. It's to make sure they're eating enough and having enough dirty diapers. After he got to his birth weight, it didn't matter as much so I stopped.

ditto! after the first week I was using the ItzBeen timer (life saver!) just to help me remember how long it had been since he ate... but stopped keeping track of it.

we didn't write anything down when we had Griffin.
When we had the twins we did - for 2 weeks... b/c we wanted to make sure they were eating enough, pooping/peeing enough- and since there were 2 of them and we had little sleep- we didn't want to rely on our memories...
I also used the chart to write when i took my pain meds- which was probably the most useful thing to have on the chart.
I didn't know I was supposed to write things down, but when ds went to his two week apt and the doc asked about how often he nursed, for how long, # of wet and dirty diapers, I could only make a guess. Then we found that ds hadn't gained nearly enough in those two weeks, so I wrote everything down until he hit birth weight!

DD had jaundice and lost a lot of weight so I had to feed every 1.5 hours, then pump and offer her the pumped milk, I was so sleep deprived (only getting about 25 minutes at a time) I had to write it down so I wouldn't get confused. The PHN terrified me into thinking if I was 10 minutes late with a feeding my baby would die. We had to bring DD into the clinic everyday to be weighed and show her my sheets with feeding times and amount of wet/dirty diapers. When I took her to her doctor he said PHN was crazy to make me do that so I tore all my sheets up THANK GOD! We did so much better after that.
I have a little book and I write down the feeding time, length of feeding, which breast it was on, if there was a diaper change if it was a poop or pee or both , when I am taking my pain meds and then how often he and I are sleeping. I do it so I can see if anything is going on. I also write down stuff that he did that day so that I can remember it for his baby book.
I wrote it down because I couldn't remember when she ate last.
Also, when they asked in the hospital when her last dirty diaper was and I'd stare blankly, I felt like an idiot. I didn't want to feel like an idiot at the doctor's office in a few days.
Once I started being able to remember things again, I stopped.
I still have no idea how many dirty diapers she has. I change her at least as often as she eats. Pedi seems satisfied with that.
