She's drinking 18oz of milk and not eating very much. When we were on vacation, we gave her more milk because it was easier, and now we're having problems again.
But I'm really wondering if it is a problem or if I'm just obsessing because I can't seem to get control over this? I mean, nutritionally speaking is 18 oz of milk and maybe one good-ish meal a day and a couple crappy ones okay at this age?
Yep. That's what my pedi told me, and also what Toddler 411 says. I don't have the book down here, but serving sizes are miniscule. Something like 3 dice = a meat serving, a ping pong ball = carbs, etc.
My pedi also said that if he's acting normal otherwise, he's just doing it as a control tactic. Once he starts being overly grumpy or waking up early or overnight, then I have to worry about getting more calories in him. That's when I break out the Carnation Instant Breakfast.
I stress way too much about it too, because he has been known to go weeks without eating any good-ish meals a day. I try to look at things on a weekly basis, but it's tough.
We let DS have 20 oz of milk, and he still eats really well with that amount. Any more, and he doesn't eat anything.
We think he has a hollow leg or something, but he will eat the same amount as I do for lunch/breakfast and yet is just barely on the growth charts for height and weight! I think his metabolism is through the roof or something--he is such a peanut.

I have the opposite--a chunky monkey who doesn't really like food.
Re: milk and food amounts?
We only allow DS 16 oz of milk a day because he won't eat if he gets more milk than that.
No, he's not a good eater. He is much better than he was, but he just would rather do other things instead of eating.
