Toddlers: 24 Months+

Does anyones 26 month old still not talk much?

My DS only has a vocab of about 50-60 words that I can understand. ?He jabbers constantly and I feel like he says other too but his articulation is so poor that it is tough to tell really how much he is saying. ?

He receives speech 1x week but I was wondering if others on here have experience with a late talker. ?

If so, do you have any fun tricks or games to get them talking more??

Re: Does anyones 26 month old still not talk much?

  • My son just turned 2 this week, but he has a vocab of about 30-40 words.  The pedi said it is still within the normal ranges for his age.  I did have him in speech 1x/week too, but I quit bc I dont feel the program he was in was that helpful.  I am not worried though bc he understands everything we say, and he babbles all the time, and he picks up new words every week.  HOenstly, I think speech is one of the most varied skills kids pick up.  Some talk so early, some later, but eventually they all catch up to each other.

Some things that I find helpful are to say loud words really excitedly like "BOOM!" and then start laughing.  He will think its funny and try to repeat me.  You can do this with any word.

Also, make a game of things, like say 1-2-3 GO!!!!!  And start running.  Then yell STOP! and of course stop suddenly (maybe even fall over exaggerating your stop)  Repeat this game over and over.  DS will start to say stop and go with me while we run and stop, run and stop, etc

Last piece of advice that I have found to work with my DS is using sounds/noises.  DS can say ALL his animal sounds just won't say the animals names themselves!  But he likes sounds effects, so I am starting with that hoping that eventually he will be able to say dog instead of woof!  But also by mkaing all these different sounds I hope it gets him to used to saying other words with these sounds.

My speech therapists advice is to use games to strengthen the mouth muscles like blow bublbes, blow horns/recorders, drink pudding through a straw, and constant repetition.  HTH!

  • I don't have personal experience with this, but I have a few friends IRL whose kids hardly talked at 2 and then sometime between 2.5 and 3 went through a speech explosion and were well within the normal range by age 3.

My nephew followed this pattern as well.  He hardly talked at all at 2, but you would never have known he was a late talker by age 4.  Now he's a very precocious 7th grader in all G/T classes!

  • Thanks for both your suggestions and for your experiences. ?It's comforting to hear others stories and get support. ?I have days when it doesn't worry me or bother me at all and then others where I feel panicky about it. ?His progress has been steady but much slower then expected. ?In all other areas he is right on target or ahead.?
  • aidan's verbal "boom" was about that age. even now i can understand 90% of what she says, but other people may not be able to. you just have to remember that she is actually exactly on target - even if it seems other kids are talking a lot more. don't worry :) as long as his receptive language is good - your ds will catch up verbally
  • I've never had issues with this, but my DD absolutely loves memorizing books and reading them back to me. Nice, short, easy, rhyming books with few words and pictures that give clues about the words. Maybe you could try something like that? We have the Skippyjon Jones board books (1-2-3, Shape Up, Colors) and my DD does really well with them.
