XP: Working ladies...when to start looking for daycare?

I was told the other day that I should have my name on waiting lists for daycares.  I haven't even started looking yet.  When did you start (or plan to start) looking for daycare?  TIA!

  • ASAP..I work for in one and our waiting list is insane.  It's at least a 6-9 month wait for our 2 year old room and infants is even worse.  GL!

  • From what DH has found in our area - many centers have wait lists of 6-18 months (but obviously sometimes there are earlier opening, but that's not predictable).  However, many in-home daycares want someone to start soon if they have an opening (so if they have an opening now, they want someone to fill it now, not in January when we need it).  This is true for some nannies too.

However, there are a lot of people pulling their kids out now because they are getting laid off, so you might have a better chance.

Good luck!  We're going through the same thing!

  • I started interviewing/calling daycares and in home daycare providers in the spring (early 2nd tri). I narrowed it down to a few options and when we decided on in home I set up joint interview (for dh and I) to see their house over the summer. We are now all set with one and she is holding a spot for us. I will return to work in Jan.
  • i started looking in Dec for a sept start. I put my deposit down in Feb.

i was about 24w when i was looking... needed them to start when they were 4mo.  It will all depend on when you'll go back to work- sooner or later- whenn you NEED to start looking.

    good luck!
