Baby Names

not much x left... help me decide!

I am having a hard time with my baby name... this is my last baby and first daughter... So the pressure is on!! I love the name Isabel or Isabella and have for alot of years but it has gotten kinda popular lately so I was thinking about keeping the name but spelling it Is'Bella... let me know what you think! Her middle name is Scarlet so the options are:

Isabel Scarlet

Is'Bella Scarlet

or let me know if you think you have something better! Thanks :)

Re: not much x left... help me decide!

  • I like the name, just not a fan of Is'Bella. Her name would always get mispelled.

  • I like Isabel better than Isabelle or Isabella.

Is'Bella is a NO way from me.

  • btw, spelling it differently isn't going to make her NOT one of 5 Isabelle's in her class. It is still pronounced the same so it's the same name. If you love Isabel, just get used to the fact that she may end up being called "Isabel P" or whatever.

No one would ever call her "Isabel with no e" or "Is'Bella with an apostrophe"

So you want to spell it Is'Bella but pronounce it Isabella? Or pronounce it Is'Bella? Yikes. No no no. This is so not good either way.

  • Personally, I would not go with the Is'Bella option.  I mean would you still pronounce it Isabella, because that doesn't make any sense.  Granted the name has gotten popular, but if you love it, you love it.

There was a girl in middle school that was Tifney but she insisted it was pronounced Tiffany.  We were always like "no" - your name is pronounced Tif-nee, your parents can't spell.  It must have been hell for her.

  • What? ?An awkward apostrophe?doesn't make Is'Bella any more unique than Isabella. ?If you're fine with a super popular name, use it, but don't torture your child by sticking random punctuation in the middle of her name.

Is'Bella is probably one of the worst name ideas I've seen on here, if you really want the truth. ?

that's funny.....yeah, not a fan, stick with Isabella, I like it!  You could call her Isa instead of Belle/Bella.  I love that name, even if it is popular!!!

  • yeah...that spelling is just....odd.  leave the regular spelling.  i'm biased here, but i LOVE the name isabella!!  i like isabel as well.  :)

  • Mhm.  Ditto pretty much all pp.  Don't do it!
  • My great-grandmother spelled her name Isobelle. That's a variation you may want to consider, as opposed to Is'Bella, which... in all honesty.. is NOT a good idea. It looks made up and will be far more of an issue for your DD than having a common name.

Or Isobel, which is the Scottish spelling of Isabel. Just leave out the apostrophe of any future name.

  • My vote is to leave out the apostrophe.  It is a very pretty name but the apostrophe and spelling ruin it. I like the traditional Scottish spelling mentioned above if you feel you must do something different.

  • Thanks to all with suggestions!

I would, however encourage people to consider feelings when responding to a post. It's quite rude to say things like "that's the worst name I have ever heard" or imply that an expecting mother doesn't know how to spell or doesn't understand phonics because they are considering changing the spelling of a name.

You haven't been on here long, have you?

I'm sorry, but when you come on a message board asking for suggestions to a name like Is'Bella you should expect it. Because that isn't a name, really. It is a name with an apostrophe dumped in the middle of it.  I don't even think anyone knows how you think you would pronounce it, since you implied it would be like Isabella but it looks like Is'Bella, like Is Bella.

People are being honest with you because you asked for opinions. If you chose to use that name people in real life would have the same reaction. It's one thing to have an alternative spelling-Catherine is the same as Katherine. Both are valid spellings of a real name. Is'Bella, however, is not the same as Isabel. You made it up, so it looks silly. That's really all there is to it. There is no reason to do that to the name.

I sympathize because not all of my name choices have been well recieved, BUT you have to understand that this board represents a pretty good cross-section of the general public, and getting an honest opinion BEFORE you decide on a name is really valuable information!

Take it as a good thing. Most people won't say to your face what they honestly think of a name, especially if there's an actual child connected to the name, but they will have biases they might express behind you/your child's back

I would assume that a child named Is'belle came from a home where reading comprehension wasn't a high priority. Maybe I'd be wrong, but that would be my impression. Take the information and do with it what you wish

This.  If you love the name use it & spell it the traditional way.  Isabella Scarlet is beautiful.

  • I'm just going to just throw out that I loved the name Emily when I was pg with DD but also feared using such a popular name. I did loads of research and one thing to keep in mind is that people use many more names today then in past years.  So for example, in 1981 when Jennifer was a #1 name, 57k baby girls received it. Whereas in 2007 when Emily was #1 only about 19k received that name.  That's about 66% fewer baby girls, yet they were both still considered the #1 for their year.  I took some comfort in that and just went with my gut.  We decided to spell DD's name the German way to match our German last name and gave a lesser known middle name to counteract and issues with her first name being possibly too mainstream.  I absolutely love DD's name: Emelie Willow.  I can honestly say that in nearly 16 months we have never run into another Emily (or Emelie for that matter..lol).  Don't be scared by using a popular name.  Isabel Scarlett is gorgeous!  GL!

  • please no apostrophes in a name!

  • I'm sorry, but I have to agree with everyone else.  When I see names like that I automatically assume that the parents are uneducated and/or horrible at spelling.  Is'Bella is NOT pronounced the same as Isabella, and trying to say that it is will just make you look, well, uneducated.  Putting random apostrophes in a name does not make it unique, it just makes things hard for your child for her entire life, and makes people assume that her parents couldn't spell/read.

If you love the name, use it.  I like the suggestion of Isobel.  That is a more traditional spelling that people will still be able to pronounce.

As hard as it may be to receive criticism online, imagine how it will feel IRL. People may not even respond as candidly without the shield of a message board; they may just do it behind your back.

I really do wish you good luck in naming your daughter and hope you don't feel offended by the responses you've received. Everyone is trying to offer you constructive help. GL!
