Contraction counting...

When I went into labor with Eli, I woke up, and my water had broken without contractions.  I did not have contractions until they gave me pitocin.  With this pregnancy as I am getting closer and closer to my due date, especially more recently, I've had an increased number of contractions, just braxton hicks I believe.  How do you know when the contractions are the kind that you start counting and what not?  Does it kinda start out with your stomach tightening and then keep getting stronger?  Is it an "easy" progression, like a smooth transition?  I know that if I am doing something and having increased contractions, but stop that activity, and the contractions slow or stop, that means they are not real labor ones.  But, how do I know when its for real? haha.  I'm just getting nervous.  I'm at least 3 cm dilated for sure.  Any advice?  Am I making my question clear?  Thanks ladies!

Re: Contraction counting...

  • I'm not the best help since I was induced, my water broke and then they started pitocin for contractions. But I think I recall them saying that with real contractions they start in your back and work all the way around. And also that they come with some regularity, like every ten minutes, not ten minutes, five minutes and twenty minutes. Does that sound right?

  • My water broke, and almost immediately I started feeling period-like cramps every four minutes or so.  They always say "you'll know real contractions from BH," and I wasn't so sure until I felt them.  Definitely cramping, rather than tightening, and they got more intense pretty quickly for me.  I didn't notice any pain in my back, though.
