Pagers for Dr's--normal?

So, maybe its just me but I don't have a pager # for any dr...Is it normal to have that contact information from your dr?  Did they offer it or did you ask?  I guess I figured that if I was so worried about something it would be a trip to the ER instead of my own dr...  Is this something I should've asked for??

Re: Pagers for Dr's--normal?

  • My clinic offers this for after hours non emergencies. Once you call the number and put in yours, one of the three Dr's (who ever is on call that day) calls you back to talk. It's been really nice to have while pregnant - I've called twice for things that I wasn't sure warranted a trip to the ER (being 30 miles away).

  • Have you ever called your Drs office after hours.  If not, try sometimes and most likely the message will tell you what to do if you have an emergency.

My Dr has an emergency line.

  • My doc just has an answering service--you call them, tell them what's going on, and they'll page the on-call doctor if necessary.
  • That would be great...I'll have to ask the OB office next time I'm there...ER trips are expensive!  Although, my 1 ER trip pretty much took care of my deductible for the year so nearly all of L&D is covered if this little girl decides to come out this year....
  • It depends on the doctor. ?Most of them have an answering service for after hours calls. ?Mine actually gives out his cell phone #. ?He said it just makes the patients feel more comfortable, plus it eliminates that wait time. ?If you are scared or confused, you can get your answer from him immediately.

Oh man I never thought about people who are having their babies at the beginning of next year.  They will have to pay 2 deductibles and will have to start from 0 on their out of pocket max.  I guess I'm lucky I get to do this whole pregnancy thing in the same year.

  • Yah, we hadn't thought about that part until the bill from the ER trip came and the statement from insurance showed us that we only had $30 something left of deductible to pay...This is the only reason I am hoping my little girl comes before the new year...otherwise I tend to lean towards feeling bad for Dec. bdays...my sister and I always had that money crunch feeling around holidays/bdays...
  • If I ever need to call my Dr about something I am worried about or if I think I am in labor and it's after hours then I just call my Dr's office.  They have it set up to page the on-call Dr and they will call you back to see what's going on.  (I went into pre-term labor with both of my boys and it was after hours and on a holiday.  They are pretty quick about returning phone calls.)

Most insurances will roll over deductible claims applied related to pregnancy. So if you have a 1000 deductible and meet 900 of it by Dec for maternity claims they'll roll the that so you only need to make up 100 before it's met.
