when family members tell me Holden is looking skinny... Yes mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparents, I know he is skinny but I dont think he looks malnourished. Im feeding him as much as he can possibly eat, maybe he is just a skinny kid! He excells in all his motor skills. He sits, crawls, pulls himself to standing, and is constantly smiling and laughing so why does everyone have to point out his one flaw?? It makes me feel like a bad mommy =( So what do you think? Does this baby look too skinny to you?

and since I am asking for your honest opinion, no I wont be hurt if you say yes. I just really want to know if everyone else is seeing something that Im not...

Re: Its really starting to hurt my feelings...
1. No, he doesn't look too skinny. He's just not a roly-poly baby.
2. I LOVE his hair.

Yeah, I'm too distracted by his awesome hair and "Yeah, you're dumb." look on his face to tell if he's "too" skinny.
He's freaking adorable. End of story.
ETA - Is this something you could ask his dr.? From your description, he seems a happy and normal baby. It doesn't look like he's starving or anything, he just doesn't have the baby chub. If the doc says he's in the normal weight range for his height/age (are those considerations?) then I'd tell that to your family.

Agreed, we used to get all kinds of "Wow she's big!" type comments about Mikayla and I used to get miffed about it. Not s'much now that she's toned up a bit from walking (I miss her thigh rolls!!). I think it's like when people see a pregnant woman, they feel the urge to say SOMETHING even if it's offensive. Try not to take it too personally, your kiddo is adorable. Or, feel free to say something if it's really bothering you - "His weight is kind of a touchy subject for us" and hope that people wise up.
Just from holding him for 15 minutes at my baby shower, he is no skinny baby. My arm hurt the next day....
Plus, he is so CUTE! I just love his facial expressions!!!
OK here's Ben at 10 months when he was standing and crawling and on the brink of walking... b/c I do think mobility makes a big difference in how they thin out.
I think Ben looks pretty similar dont' you think? He's not skin and bones but he doesnt have all of those Michelin man baby rolls that kids have. In fact he never really had those mounds of rolls. He's always been a higher percentile for height than weight. And an even higher percentile for head! yikes.
I think that the fact that H is moving so much - crawling at 7 months? whoa! that will naturally thin him out. Tell peopole to shut up.
He looks perfect to me! If I could see ribs sticking out, i'd wonder.
And I'm one of the rude ones who would say somehting liek "he's so little!' but only in comparison to my chunky monkey. And only becasue it is very very clear he is healthy and well nourished.
Hmmm, there's something familiar about that hair. Sting? When was he last here on tour, anyways, winkwink?
Also, yeah, he's pretty skinny, but skinny is not the same as unhealthy. I'm sure they use *that* tone of voice when they ask. Just say NO to the mommy guilt.
Many, many people (family included) have told me that Isa is "small for her age" or "needs to thicken up"...etc and it's made be crazy obsessed about her weight. I feel your pain, mama! It's plain old rude. I started telling people that it really bothered me when they said things like that and most stopped. Strangers can just eff off.
He does NOT look skinny. He looks healthy and adorable.
He looks normal to me. DS1 dropped off the growth chart and was in negative percentiles by 6 months. He stayed this way until he turned 2 where he got on the chart at 3%. Because of this, all kids look huge to me and I'm one of those who is guilty of always saying "he/she is so big!" I can so relate to how you are feeling though. DS1 was just a really active baby and crawled early like Holden. He also was meeting all of his milestones generally early and we were doing monthly weight checks at the doctor for awhile just to be sure he was okay. Finally our ped said not to worry about it, that he's going to be a small kid for now and he's so active that he is burning off what he's eating and it's okay.
I basically told people, generally family, over and over again that he's fine, just small. Now, at 3 years old, he's average height but for weight he's at 27.5 pounds, sometimes 28 pounds. We have friends with 1.5 year old kids that weigh more than DS1 so you can imagine the comments we hear all the time. I have just learned to not let them affect me and that people are more curious than anything. Especially since I know I seem to do the opposite and talk about how big kids are, even when I'm aware I shouldn't be doing it. It just pops out of my mouth!
He's an adorable boy! Anyway, it's what you think that's important

I haven't read any of the responses, and I'm not a mom nor am I an expert on baby nutrition, but in my honest opinion, he looks healthy to me! I'd expect laziness, lack of ability to interact, etc. in a malnourished baby.
You're an excellent mom, Jen!!!!!
Actually, he is underweight for his age/height according to growth charts. Ive been working with his dr for the past 2 months. As of his last weight check he was 14 lbs, 5 lbs up fom birth so we have been feeding him tons to get him to gain. Thats why i see this as a "flaw" that people keep pointing out to me...
Ben looks a lot like Holden size wise! and I wish I could just tell them to shut it but theyre family, and they wouldnt take that well. Strangely whenever strangers ask how old he is and I tell them their reply is almost always "woah, big boy!" lol! I just dont think people know...
Im glad to hear this! Holden has been in negitive percentile for weight (avg for height) up until just recently when he hit 14 lbs he bumped up into the 2nd percentile. Im jealous of your monthly weight checks, we go weekly...
I also can never tell how old other babies are because I judge them on their size compared to Holden.. I think its funny when I guess that a kid is 7 months and theyre actually 4 lol =P
Thank you everyone for the support! Its really hard to know that something isnt perfect with your baby, and people pointing it out is just making it harder.
And to everyone who commented on his hair, i LOVE it!! it always sticks up in every which direction, and I am constantly running my fingers through it, its so soft and full! Plus now that the front part is starting to lay down a little bit he kind of has this "flock of seaguls" look goin on! People everywhere comment on it! =D
