Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO start talking?

DD is 12 1/2 months old and has exactly ZERO words.  No "mama," no "dada," no nothing.  She points, makes the sign for "all done," and understands basic commands without gestures (go get your bus, put it in the box, where is x or y thing).  She babbles a lot, but that's about it.

Re: When did your LO start talking?

  • We're in the same boat. She'll say mama and dada but they're just an extension of her babbling. My pedi wants her saying 3 words by 15 months and I'm not sure if that's going to happen :-/

  • My poor DD. She tries so very hard, but she's so incredibly lazy. She says "dah" (dog), "cah" (cat), mama, dada, uh uh (while shaking her finger and hear head no), and "thay" which is supposed to be thank you. She has said words plain as day, and then she never says them again. She's said hot dog, B B (which is her godmother who lives with us, Aunt B), as clear as can be.

  • Maybe my DD is the odd one out...She's been nonstop talking since she was 9 months old. Her first word was cat, then dada. I think mama might have been about her 10th word. She now repeats every thing I say that she can form words for. She was a late walker and crawler though so maybe she developed her language skills before her motor skills?

That's something to think about - is your DD very physical? My pedi told me not to worry too much about it b/c DD is very physical, but now she is starting to say more words, though most everything is more like a sound (animal sounds, sounds for the first letter or two of a word, etc.).  Babies vocal chords actually have to develop before they can speak, so yours just may not have developed enough yet.  At least she can understand what you say, so there's probably not a problem there.  Try to encourage her to talk by waiting for her to respond to you, repeat after you, and making her tell you what she wants, then encourage her for her efforts.

According to BabyCenter's milestone chart, "most kids" can use two words skillfully by 13mos, three words regularly by 15mos (tho I'd like to know what they mean by regularly), and  six words regularly by 17mos. Keep in mind, too, that sometimes a babbling sound to you may actually be a word to your child - is there a sound used consistently for something? This link https://www.babycenter.com/0_developmental-milestone-talking_6573.bc?page=1 provides some info on speech development and indicators for concern.

  • 10 months. at 18 months he's saying close to full sentences.
  • At 12.5 months, my DD didn't say anything, either.  Now she's almost 14 months and can say a handful of words.  It started around 13-13.5 months.

Some words she can say clearly (like mama, dada, and up), but other words only I know what she's saying (like thank you and bib), and then there are words that she's said once and hasn't said them since (like duck and fish).

I wouldn't worry.  Someday you'll long for the days when she was quiet!  ( :
