2nd Trimester

Anyone considering a cradle?

In my crib indecision, I have been surfing online, searching like Goldilocks for the right damn crib.

I have been adamantly anti-bassinet (I think the ones I've seen are hideous), and we can't co-sleep (2 floppy sleepers).  I was planning on using the PNP for a bassinet, but I came across a cradle that I found very sweet.  I thought that after Charlie outgrew it, we could use it for stuffed animal storage/display... that is, until he thought it was "dumb,"  but by then, I anticipate us using it for another baby...

Thoughts?

  • My dad will be making us a homemade cradle which we'll use for the first few months. He's already asking me what stain etc. we want so I'm excited!

  • We have a cradle that has been in my family for years. We were going to use it exactly like you said. Once they grow out of it use it for stuffed animals, blankets, etc. We were going to use it but it's just too hard to get it from my parents house in TX to our house in Vermont. I think it's a good idea though.?
  • We will use a cradle.  It was DH's when he was a baby, and DD used it comfortably for about 10 weeks.  Hopefully Baby #2 likes it as much!  I think it's sweet that we're using it, especially because MIL and I don't have the best relationship.

  • We are using the cradle that my dad built for me when mom was pregnant with me. It is so pretty......walnut and I love it!!!
  • My mom has one at her house that my dad and grandpa made when I was on the way. I would LOVE to use it, but it's about 3/4 the size of a crib and we have very limited space, so unfortunately it looks like my mom will have it at her place and we will use the bassinet...sad because it's so awesome to have.
  • We have a cradle that my dad made for my sister, then I used it, then each of my nephews, then DD.  So we will obviously be using that.

However, if we didn't have it, I would just go straight to the PNP bassinet.  Even though the cradle seems pretty sizeable, DD outgrew it at around 6 weeks (and she was a tiny baby), because she started moving a bit and getting too close to the sides for our comfort.  So she was in the PNP bassinet after that anyway, and she slept there until we moved her to her crib in her room at around 4 months.

So, if you are contemplating buying a cradle, and you wouldn't be using one for sentimental reasons like some of the posters here, I would skip it.  The PNP bassinet works fine, and it's a shame to spend money on something you'll use for an extremely short time, IMO.

I totally understand your POV!   However, those heirloom cribs were new at some point... and I'm a sentimental kind of gal.
