Babies: 0 - 3 Months

baby only in 10 percentile...anyone have this??

Last week we went to the doctors and they said that they were worried about DS' weight. He's in the 10% for everything....weight, height & head cir. Now everyone I have talked to has told me not to worry about this and some kids are just little and dont grow as fast as others.

But I do worry because I also know someone who had twins and one of her LOs wasnt growing as fast as the other and she wasnt able to digest proteins very well so she wasnt growing like she should be.

We started on solids last week and DS has taken to them very well. So I'm hoping that this will help.

Anyone else dealt with this? I hope I'm not the only one with a really small baby :S

TIA!

  • Don't worry- some kiddos are just small.  He's growing the way he needs to- I don't know who set the paramaters for "normal" growth but as long as he's gaining weight, etc, then it's fine.

  • DD has always ranged between the 12-18th percentile. She is 50% for length and head circumference. Her pedi is not concerned at all and says that as long as she is consistently gaining and not dropping off of her growth curve, that we have nothing to worry about. Some babies are just smaller.

  • did you pedi tell you to start solids that early because he is so small? I havent dealt with this but i hope that it all works out! He is adorable?
  • My baby is also a low percentile, she is only 6lbs
  • i know someone whos baby is in a low % and she is just under the impression that her kid will be small..
  • I'm sure I would be worried too...you're his mom, it's only natural for you to worry!  But it's true that babies all grow at different rates.  I have a friend whose year-and-a-half old son is in the 5th percentile - and there's nothing wrong with him, he's just small.  Hope the solids help!
  • Also, are you BF or FF?  If you're BF, make sure they're using the growth charts for BF babies.  Until pretty recently, I think, drs were using the FF growth charts for all babies; BF babies grow at different rates that FF.  HTH.

That aside, I agree with PP: could just be that you have a smaller baby.  It's okay to worry; it means you're a great mother!  FWIW, I also have a friend whose baby was born and has stayed in the 5% range her whole life (she's almost 11 months now).  Some babies are just smaller than others.  I would think as long as your baby continues to grow at a steady rate, even if it continues to be in the 10th %, that that means it's normal for him.

  • I had a really small baby. Solids will not help them grow, and will generally only make it worse.  10% is not really all that small.  My DD was off the charts small, <3%.

Ditto this. Breastmilk and formula are about as high calorie/high fat as "baby food" comes. Solids will only be giving your baby less than she needs at this point.  Continue to feed your baby BM/FF. Small babies are okay, as long as they are thriving.

DD was under 5% for a long time. She's just not a big eater. She's 3 now and loves her fruits and veggies. I did worry a lot when she was a baby. She had really bad reflux for the first year. She spit up ALLLLLLL the time. We kept a bib on her 24/7. That stopped almost exactly at one year. Don't worry unless he's not eating at all. And baby food has LESS calories than breastmilk/formula.

  • DS is in the 90th percentile so I'm not any help there, but think about this to make you feel better. Someone HAS to be the 10th percentile, math doesn't allow everyone to be above 50%, so don't get too upset about it as long as your LO is healthy and getting everything they need!
