Our LO has thrush and was prescribed Nystatin. I'm wondering what is the most effective way to give it to him. We tried squirting it inside his cheek on each side of his mouth, but he either swallowed or spit most of it back out pretty quickly. Is there a better way to make sure it gets in contact and stays in contact with the thrush? Also, the pedi told me to put some of it on my nipples too...it that normal or should I call my dr. to get a different prescription?
Re: thrush and nystatin
We are just getting over thrush here and my first son had it as well. Dip Q-tips in the nystatin and rub it on each cheek, the tongue, roof of the mouth and inside the lips. Don't double-dip the Q-tip though. I would use 3 Q-tips total for each time I gave DS the nystatin.
The kind you have for your DC is very sticky. I would recommend you call your doctor and get the cream nystatin for you. If your nipples hurt at all from BFing, definitely get the cream. You won't like the feeling if your nipples are sticky and you pull the breast pad off. OUCH! Make sure that you take a wet washcloth or paper towel and clean off the extra cream before you nurse though.
Between the nystatin liquid for DS and the cream for me, we cleared up the thrush in about 4 or 5 days. Oh, another thing... if your LO gets a bright red diaper rash with small red "dots" just outside of the red rash, its probably yeast aswell. It's the thrush/yeast working through their system. The cream nystatin can be used a few times a day in the diaper area and that will clear up the rash.
Good luck!
We used a q-tip. Cover it completely in Nystatin and then rub it all over their mouth - they hate it, but there really is no other way to make sure its coating the whole thing.
And yes, you can also put it directly on your nipples. In fact make SURE you do.
Little tiny bits at a time inside the cheeks 4 times a day. We had DS on it for 2 weeks. It cleared most of it up but we ended up using Gentian Violet which you apply directly upon the patches once every 3 days.
Also make sure you are sterilizing EVERYTHING baby puts in their mouth including pacifiers and toys. We still do this and rotate DS's pacifiers after each feeding.
